just a thought before you pull the M44... use some corner scales to weigh the car before and after you do the swap and then move the battery only if you need to/choose to. You can write out the secondary air pump that normally goes there, have the batt off to the side to start the new motor, etc. Maybe even do the knock out in the firewall while the motors are out if that's the hardest access issue.

I appreciate your efforts though in finding a common parts solution to this that does not require heroic measures like welding, etc! Just want to make sure it yields a benefit. That and no one has actually weighed a car pre-swap and post swap. If you don't have scales I went to a scrap yard where they weigh your vehicle loaded and unloaded and pay you accordingly. The scale was visible from the outside and you could even pull up only half way to get a relative front/rear proportional weight. Of course I looked a little weird doing it...

No lost trunk space, no lost tools, no removal of spare, and a regular battery!

I also weighed the car today with the stock M42 motor;

Front wheels only on the scale: 1460 lbs
Rear wheels only on the scale: 1300 lbs
whole car on the scale: 2780 lbs

(I account for the 20 extra lbs from stock weight due to the heavier Vader seats...)

Very slick James, looks great! Thanks for taking the time and researching a good solution for this.

Your weights don't add up to 2780? Still though, At 1460/1320 your sitting at 52/48 weight distribution, not bad.

Dave, the scale I used was a truck scale that measured in 20lb increments, so I blame the #'s not adding up properly to a calibration issue...

Also, the car had less than a 1/4 tank of gas when weighed. Allowing for approx. 8lbs per gallon to get the car upto a half tank (25-30 extra pounds) would bring the weight distrubtion even closer...

Nice, according to the Dec '94 roundel article, stock weight distribution was 51.4/48.6, so you are spot on.

So today my mother needed a new battery for her 300e mercedes wagon and I thought to myself what a perfect time to get myself a new smaller battery. What I ended up doing is swapping my battery thats like 1 yr old into the old school Benz and bought myself a Miata battery from Autozone like James did except he bought his on an online store. It fit alright but my positive cable is short for some reason and I don't want to take the passenger interior apart today since its pouring like crazy. The one I bought from my Autozone here is a bit more snug though, no biggy, still better than my massive battery. We'll see how this one holds up.

I had to extend my donor cars positive cable. I don't understand why, as the battery is in the same location as the coupe it came out of, and I ran it through the car using the same path as the factory did...

Anyway, the battery is fine, cranks great... however, it is a SLA (sealed lead acid) battery just like an Optima, and they don't like to be fully drained, so no running the stereo and lights without the car on to keep it charged... We actually killed the first one while we were doing the swap and it wouldn't keep a charge anymore. But the Bosch came with a full 3 year replacement warranty, so I swapped it for a new one at no cost...

what did you use to extend the cable? i was trying to look at the auto store and couldn't really find something i needed to do so. any hints?

I bought a 24" 0gauge cable with a post terminal on one end and a flat mount on the other. I connected the flat mount to the end of the car's post terminal with the nut and bolt, then the post to the battery... I wrapped and then shrink-wrapped the splice also...

When I get around to it, I will cut off the ends and then solder them together for a more correct fix...

That's really weird, realoem shows the M3 coupe as using the same cable as the 328 coupe and sedan as well as the 323 coupe.
