Or the older standard will still be fine? How about driving gloves? __________________ 1998 BMW 318ti M-Tech Sport Silver (Gone to member leeko617) CURRENT: 2015 BMW X1, 2004 BMW 330ci Convertible, 1998 Porsche Boxster, 2001 BMW 525i Touring GONE: 2000 Audi A4, 2002 VW Passat, 1985 VW Cabriolet | | | 02-10-2006, 11:46 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: UK Posts: 163 | snell 2005 is currently highest standard... I'd check with the driving school before you buy... Also depends what you are going to use the helmet for afterwards... I have a "Champ" Impact Racing helmet... but then I am going to be using it for sprint and hill climbs in an open top kitcar... I can highly recommend Impact racing helmets though... Aso try on as many as you can as they all will fit slightly differently... My IR helmet fitted best out of all of them... Best advise I was given was buy the best you can afford... which fit you requirements. hope this is of use...? __________________ BMW 318ti Sport Compact Dakar Edition TOTAL BMW Magazine - Project car #2 Mods: BB Throttle body * Gruppe-m induction * Engine re-map * AC type 3 Lightweight 17" alloys * Eisenmann exhaust 2 X 70mm pipes * Hand brake and Gear shift - Vitesse products * Black Grilles - De-Chromed! * Eibach Springs and dampers (30mm lower) * ACS S3 Dakar mirrors - Now on and looking mint! * Carbon Fibre M3 Lip * Carrying 318ti.org stickers * Coupe headlights with HIDs and Gen6 angel eyes | | | 02-10-2006, 11:48 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: UK Posts: 163 | Gloves is the same deal.. try before you buy... and all depends on money? I have a set of sparco Tech-Pro Gloves... more money but better than the cheap ones which will hopefully last a lot longer... __________________ BMW 318ti Sport Compact Dakar Edition TOTAL BMW Magazine - Project car #2 Mods: BB Throttle body * Gruppe-m induction * Engine re-map * AC type 3 Lightweight 17" alloys * Eisenmann exhaust 2 X 70mm pipes * Hand brake and Gear shift - Vitesse products * Black Grilles - De-Chromed! * Eibach Springs and dampers (30mm lower) * ACS S3 Dakar mirrors - Now on and looking mint! * Carbon Fibre M3 Lip * Carrying 318ti.org stickers * Coupe headlights with HIDs and Gen6 angel eyes | | | 02-10-2006, 12:46 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I know I have the BMW CCA requirement somewhere, but basically helmets can go back two ratings. This year 1995, 2000 and 2005 are acceptable. Next year only 2000 and 2005 will be accepted. So you can use a 2000 helmet for another 5 years, I'd do with 2005 though. Try a lot of them on. I'd go to HMS. Gloves, I don't think think it are as important as far as the date goes. I have been using a pair of Sparce Profi gloves.I bought them make in 98 I think. They don't use the same ratings but mine comply to FIA86 rules. They are starting to tear and need to be replaced. Just be sure they are comfortable, the proper size and nomex. I also use a neck collar or brace. It is debatable whether they will help in a collision, but it seems to take some of the weight off my head fromt the helmet and pass it to my shoulders. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-10-2006, 02:57 PM | #5 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | any other info on the neck collar? i can imagine the neck would get rather tired otherwise. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 02-10-2006, 04:16 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Port St. Johns, Florida Posts: 2,242 | I need a new helmut, some more comfortable that the full face I got now. | | | 02-10-2006, 05:39 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Boston MA Posts: 221 | Thanks for all the info. That is very helpful. I am going to attend a Tech Session at HMS. May try on some helmets there. Gloves ratings: FIA, SFI, what's the difference? Any ratings for neck collars? __________________ 1998 BMW 318ti M-Tech Sport Silver (Gone to member leeko617) CURRENT: 2015 BMW X1, 2004 BMW 330ci Convertible, 1998 Porsche Boxster, 2001 BMW 525i Touring GONE: 2000 Audi A4, 2002 VW Passat, 1985 VW Cabriolet | | | 02-10-2006, 06:10 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Jacksonville, Florida Posts: 322 | I don't think 95's are valid anymore. I'd recommend going at least with a 2000. | | | 02-10-2006, 06:57 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by bmw318tiChic I don't think 95's are valid anymore. I just ordered a new pair of gloves to replace my old ones. Ouch! $115.00 for Sparco Profi. If you buy gloves get a color that contrasts your car. Don't try to make a fashion statement trying to match your car. It helps to see your hands when you give pointbys when they contrast your car. There are some real cheap neck collars. Don't go cheap. I am replacing my Simpson. Joe Marko can fill you in with all the details. With safety equipment get the best your budget will allow. I may get shoes this year too. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-10-2006, 11:54 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | There are some gloves for sale on http://www.alexreade.net/. They are used but they were used by an F1 driver and they are signed. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Thread Tools | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
