Default 96 318ti No reading the obd2 scanner

Hey yall, hope the new year is treating everyone good!!! Ive been traveling and now back in the area. My 96 318ti has been great since the radiator and cooling repairs but Ive had a check engine light come and go. No visible or physical signs so I didnt think anything of it. Now the lights been on for a bit and wont go away, so I tried to use a acetron cp9135 obd2 scanner and it wont interface with the car! All my electronics work, so I'm stumped! Gonna try and pull the negative battery cable and see what happens. Any advice would be great guys!
