How does car insurance work in the USA. You boys are dropping six pots, V8's, turbo's and super's into compacts. Whats the insurance like. I was going to buy a compact which had a 3.2 evo engine and drivetrain, but to insurance it was £3000 (approx $5400) Decided not to buy it and just do bolt-on mods to my compact | | | 09-24-2005, 09:11 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by bryboy Thanks, I've got one question for you USA boys. Some companies require you to notify them of any such modifications. My company doesn't. My car is insured as a 318ti. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 09-25-2005, 05:13 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Saint Paul, MN Posts: 3,244 | Quote: Originally Posted by 1996 328ti Depends on your insurance company. With Progressive it did not seem to increase your liability to have an S52 which is also an e36 engine which I explained as an engine that was available on other versions of my car (e36). A stretch for sure. Never went so far as to purchase the ins. but when looking at modded Ti's that's what I found. __________________ My Former Rides 1999 318ti Alpine White, Cali Roof, Dinan goodies 1996 318ti Hellrot California Edition | | | 09-25-2005, 09:20 AM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: London, UK Posts: 19 | Wow, No wonder the modding scene is so big in the USA. Over here if you put a non standard part on your car without informing your insurance company and they find out, 9 time out of 10 your screwed. If your car didn't leave the factory with it or it wasn't a main dealer fit option, then its a non standard part and finding insurance can be problem at a decent price. | | | 09-25-2005, 11:21 AM | #8 | Member Join Date: Jul 2005 Location: Wiltshire, UK Posts: 83 | Quote: Originally Posted by bryboy Over here if you put a non standard part on your car without informing your insurance company and they find out, 9 time out of 10 your screwed. | Tell me about it, my insurance almost doubled because of my Z4 M Wheels and Ac Schnitzer Spoilers even though it makes no difference to the performance of the car. Usual rip off Britain I'm afraid! Think your insurance for an M3 would be a tad higher than a 318ti? 138hp vs 240 hp. As far as the tuner scene, my guess is they are covering ICE and bling. As soon as they discover a Fast and Furious type wrapped around a tree with NO2 my guess is it will be a battle between insurance company and ricer. I believe in Canada you also need to declare any performace mods. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
