Since you are expecting worse, I will give you better:
  • it has a trunk and a clean spare tire
  • it is easier to get passengers into the back seat, including really little ones
  • you can add an OBC with lots of buttons and have a fun toy for the grown ups.

Thumbs down

What year is it, I have heard that the early models (92-93) were problematic. First couple of years of the first all CAD designed cars were not fully sorted out. I probably wouldn't touch one with that many miles unless it were a 95 or newer.

BMW sorted out all the major E36 engineering problems by Fall 1993. If you get one built then or afterwards you should be in pretty good shape in that regard.

Maybe I am just unlucky, but everyone I know who owned an E36 built before 1993 was happy to be rid of it.

That would depend on the maintenance that was done on the car. Regular oil & Filter changes is critical, plus flushing all fluids at least every couple of years. That is a lot of miles, but on a 12 year old car is only 15K per year. Was this a highway cruiser or just a town car? That impacts the wear, clutch, brakes, A/C and so on.

Get the records if you can.
