Please Help. I am having an idle problem that starts after I have been driving the car for about 10-15 mins. I will be driving and when I stop at a traffic light my car idles just fine. But after sitting there for about a minute the car will slowly idle idle up to just at 900 rpms. It will stay right there and will not move, right at 900. After I drive off the car is fine but will do the same thing when I stop again. After a minute it will idle up. In the drive-thru it sucks because it will idle up and I can't get it to go down until after I pull off. So it just stays pegged at 900. Does anyone have any thoughts as to want it may be??? Thanks for the help. -Will __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-19-2009, 01:52 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Has the check engine light come on? Not sure if this is the problem but I was riding with my co worker the other day (Subaru Impreza) and his car started doing exactly what you describe. We scanned it and it turned out to be misfire codes. Very rough idle at stoplights, fine while driving. When was the last time you changed your plugs? __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 01-19-2009, 01:58 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | Will I could be completely off base here, but what is your temp gauge doing at these times? My thoughts are maybe the car is cooling too much and then decides to idle high... thermostat and/or the fan temp sending switch malfunctioning? It has been on for awhile, it's not a problem I just haven't cleared the codes since the last time it was scanned and fixed. I will try to get out to my mechanic so he can clear the codes and check them. But I changed my plugs like a little less than 10,000 miles. They should be fine. __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-19-2009, 02:04 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | Quote: Originally Posted by wolferj Will I could be completely off base here, but what is your temp gauge doing at these times? I just replaced the radiator and the coolant level is fine and the the temp gauge never moves it stays on the middle. I thought it may have been the weather at first but it was up to 60 degrees today so I no longer think it is that. __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-19-2009, 06:29 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | bump for some help please __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-19-2009, 10:21 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Orange County, CA Posts: 11 | o2 sensor..?? a bad o2 sensor will cause idle fluctuation and it will definately cause a CEL (check engine light) 1. Scan your CEL. or to test the O2 function: Rev the car upto 2500 RPM and keep it steady for like 10 seconds.... if you notice the RPMs fluctuate, the o2 sensor is shot. (precat likely) With a new O2, the car should maintain 2500rpm with NO change. Scan and fix! then scan clear again! | | | 01-20-2009, 06:02 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | Quote: Originally Posted by ELIBEEMER o2 sensor..?? a bad o2 sensor will cause idle fluctuation and it will definately cause a CEL (check engine light) 1. But I can tell you that I replaced my (precat) O2 sensor not even 10,000 miles ago. So I don't think it is bad already. I also noticed today that I got only about 25 mpg. It was mostly city but still this has me worried and mad because I hate getting mileage like that when I know it should be 30 to 32mpg. If anyone has any other input please post. Is it just the cold weather making my car act like this??? Or does something need to be replaced??? __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-21-2009, 04:05 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | Ok after driving the car today I have decided that it may be a vacuum problem. I will checking hoses tomorrow. Since it started happening in the winter I am sure it is from those hoses getting cold and exposing cracks. And all the other symptoms seem to point to a vacuum leak. Well I shall get back to this when I get everything checked out. __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-22-2009, 12:57 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | On inspection of the vacuum hoses I think I may have found my problem. I think it may be the hose running from the crankcase to the crankcase vent valve. I hear air coming from the vent valve, it sounds like more than normal. Do you guys think that this may be the problem either the valve or hose itself??? I don't want to spend 80 bucks replacing these parts if it won't fix the problem. Please help me out. Any input is welcome seeing as my car now gets 20mpg instead of the 30mpg I normally get. Please PLEASE help me!
