Swapped out damaged driver door exterior moulding with new. FYI PN 51138146363 comes with all necessary clips. I didn't know this and purchased extra. Also swapped in new door seal.

Hatch rattle. I tried extending the rubber stops on the corners but that only worked for a week. Investigated and noticed the latch was worn out in the same place that the catch makes contact allowing for excessive play. Just enough that the hatch would rattle over bumps. (Have seen similar things on hoods of other cars)

So I used a dremel to slot the mounting holes on the hook and then re-attached with thick washers between the hook and frame. This placed the hook down and forward slightly (like a 3mm) from its previous position just enough that the catch now hooks to a non-worn location on the latch. After a month its still rattle free. Also, costs nothing.

AirBag dash light came on. Time to trouble shoot, but first new headliner.

No headliner yet. Blew the radiator but saved the engine. New core installed and running again. I really feel stupid paying $25 for 4 quarts of magical BMW coolant.

There are so many little things, but so far nothing major. The engine still purrs, and doesnt consume oil.

The shifter bushings are so warn out that its hard to differentiate 2nd and 4th. Gives a new meaning to the phrase "wet noodle." Its pretty funny.
That plastic fitting isn't bad if you pull the valve cover and other stuff that's in the way. I wear XL gloves and didn't have a problem; put the new hoses on the fitting before you bolt it in.
I don't know how much clearance there is on the oil pan but if you need motor mounts I'd pull them and drop the engine that little bit to give you even more room.

Rear window sprayer working now. Prior owner didn't even know there was one as it appears to have clogged up and never functioned since new.

Found it clogged at pump and nozzle. This is what worked for me.
Disconnected black ABS elbow at base of wiper and attached bike pump for schrader valves to nipple. Back flowed air until bubbles in reservoir.
Disconnected spray nozzle and cleaned out ports by hand with small needle. Then vigorous shaking in CLR for 10 minutes.

Reattached and works like a champ.
Couple of notes: Had to realign nozzles using a needle. Also be cautious not to crack ABS elbow as I had done. Could not find replacement elbow anywhere except as part of complete wiper assembly. Small drop of plastic adhesive on crack after reassembly to nipple fixed it.

Refurbished the headliner, sunroof, A and C post panels with tweed fabric, looks better than new.

Swapped new steering from firewall to knuckles (everything but high pressure line and pump). No more slop.

Next up: New radio head unit with bluetooth. OEM unit volume control doesn't want to work until the car warms up, don't blame it really. It's been cold in the morning.

32.9 mpg last fill up with 344,000 miles on odometer.

Replaced OEM head unit with an Alpine 133BT. Running through OEM amp and speakers, sounds much better. Able to improve bass response of the little OEM speakers with the Alpine Equalizer.

Swapped out LCA and had a bitch of a time getting outer ball joints released from knuckle. Pickle fork, 10lb hammer AND torch. Never had to use a torch before and I was starting to worry it would never pop out. Otherwise it was an easy swap. I bought pre-pressed bushings and used soap + hammer to slide onto LCA shaft for reassembly.

Thanks for the running diary. I've got a '96 with 177K miles on her. She needs a new clutch, differential, and shifter column. The stuff on there works OK, but she's a little noisy. I've got a UUC short shift kit ready to be installed. I just need to get some money together and she'll be in really good shape.

"Trixie" also has an Alpine unit in her. Watch those speakers! She blew the OEM speakers and now I'm considering putting Alpine speakers in to handle the increased power. I don't want to do a hack job on the back, so I'm looking at some Alpine 4" speakers for the front and rear. All of the other ones seem to be doing fine.

my stepdad had a ti that lasted 296,000 miles. what broke on his was the coolant Y piece in the back of the engine, which i had to replace recently. if his car hadn't been broken into 3 times and completely torn up on the inside and with the coolant Y piece broken, he would have kept it.

My ti was literally driven by a little old lady and it is in amazing shape for its age and mileage. For instance, I swapped out the steering joints and the old ones were just as tight as the new. I'm doing preventative maintenance in hopes of not being stranded. Otherwise there is nothing that needs to be "fixed."

Next up: tires, fuel pump, front cover gaskets/ chain guides.

New fuel pump installed. New tires all around 195/65. Alignment and running smooth as butter. With taller tires, the speedometer is measuring about 1% faster than actual per GPS.

Starting to daydream about 6 cylinder swap instead of replacing the M44 chain guides... but my other car is already fast and the Ti is my DD. I hate logic. Will take a break from the Ti soon and refresh the intercooler and blower on my Camaro, quench the need for speed.

348k miles, 32 mpg
