It was very low mileage and never driven in rain or snow.

Yes, I did fly into Harrisburg. I didn't become acquainted with this site until I got the car home. You have a beautiful state. I really enjoyed driving it east to west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, though lord knows how much I paid in tolls. Drop by if your ever down Texas way.

It was going to be scrapped, it was a co workers daughters' car. She drove it 400 miles after she bought it and the cooling system blew....It sat for 6 months, and I heard about it and gave em a few bucks for it. It is a mechanics special, it just had a JY motor put in it (the one that blew up) and everything was shot...

They paid 3400 and drove it 400 miles....

It happens...that's why I get concerned when some of our young enthusiasts take the plunge on very high mileage ti's with no service histories. I admire their enthusiasm, however, and a car poorly bought can be a good lesson for the future.

I hope i'm not falling into this trap. I'm about to make a decision on a 96 ti with 180,000 miles on it. what should i look for in the service histories?

Default 1996 318ti

198,XXX miles, five speed, active package, no body rust, dirty cloth interior, AC works. Sat for 1 1/2 years due to blown head gasket/coolant leak. Starts and runs (kinda) drove it 7 blocks to my house. I'm the third owner and have the first two owners maintenance records.
$355 because we could not jump start it and had to buy a new battery...
I open up the engine next week to see what the damage is.

Nice pick up, I need to find something like this. You didn't mention the year but if its a '95 and you happen to need a spare motor, I got one for sale in the classifieds. Hope the car works out for ya...

Bought a white 96 ti, LSD and style 27 wheels with 174k miles and overheated engine for $75. Bought a used engine for $400 and got it running in 3 weeks after replacing the radiator and coolant hoses. It has 198k miles now and still runs like a champ.
