Default Went to my Mechanic

So I went to my mechanic today, seeing as to how my steering problem hasnt really improved (even after flushing my PS system). What he told me was suprising. I explained that the steering the car is menacing, some times easier than others to drive the damn thing. The steering wheel is way to hard to turn and it cuts down on reaction times in case of an emergency. Well, he told me that he thinks its the ball joints, and that BMW only sells them complete with the control arms. Does this sound right to you guys?

If I get full metal ball joints, will that aliviate my problem, or should I give the PS system another flushing and hope that it improves?

which balls joints? there are two sets. you have the outers (which attach to the tie rods on the end of the steering rack and the ends of the control arms) and you have the inners (in the middle of the control arms). you should be able to determine if they're worn/loose or not.

i would also read the thread someone posted about cleaning and lubricating the steering column (titled something about steering squeak), it may be something to try first as well.

Default Update

So after work he takes the car for a ride. He changed his mind! He now says it could be two things, either a bad PS pump, or a bad rack and pinnion. Made an appointment next week, he's gonna put it on the lift to check it out.

So he'll take it for a ride and not throw it on a lift? I'd get a second opinion as well.

He only has two lifts, and they both occupied. One by an Infiniti I30 and the other by a BMW 325i
