Default What is this?

I have an odd rattle that sounds as if it is coming from under the passenger's seat. It only rattles at 700rpm, 2700 rpm, and 3700-ish rpm. Odd!

It happened after I ran over a piece of road debris on the interstate Saturday.

I checked underneath the car and I see this thing. It *is* loose and moves readily and looks like it could be the culprit. WHAT IS IT?

Good question. I don't have anything that looks like that. If it's not attached to anything, cut it off. What year is your car?

it's a vibration absorber. should be present on ... 97 and up models? something like that. i know because i just asked for pics of where it gets installed, lol. that said, yours looks to be BROKEN. the clamp that holds it on should go ALL THE WAY round the exhaust pipe. it's basically a two piece clamp held together on the side opposite the rubber absorber itself with a bolt. i would take it off altogether and then determine whether or not you want to actually replace it.

It doesn't look like it is attached to anything. I don't see it in the Bentley book either....

Thanks!

How does your car ride without one? Is it noticable?

I guess at this point, I should remove it.

i have a 96 so mine NEVER had one. i ordered it before i knew that, lol. however, looking at what it does and where it mounts, i see NO reason why it shouldn't mount up and work just fine on 96+ models. i want to try painting it with high temp paint before i mount it up so (hopefully) it won't rust to hell like yours did and fall off (i've heard of this happening to others as well).

I just went out and removed mine. It slipped right off so it is good that I removed it. It looks like whatever it was I ran over on the road broke the clamp and it was barely hanging on.

I test drove it - no more rattle!

Thanks guys!
