Default Possible to swap shift knobs?

The wife wants me to give my latest project car to my son so he can get to school and work. Ok, (begrudginly) but I need another "project" so I'm looking at a pre-'98 automatic (I'm an old man, remember!) with the t-bar shifter. Does anyone know if it's possible to change it over to the '98-'99 "press-button"-pistol grip type shifter? Thanks!

i think you can do it. there is a small set screw on the backside (closest to dash) oh the t-bar style for sure and im assuming the "pistol grip" style. i was just looking at both of these at the junkyard the other day. when you undo the set screw you can pop the know off. be careful though when it comes off it has a spring loaded white plastic rod inside the shifter knob. DONT LOSE THIS! you need it so that when you put the new knob on you cant slide the handle through the gears. the white rod activates when you press the knob button and lifts off a "gear brake" right under the plastic trim.

hope that helps some.

There are threads about it.... The actuator rod is a different length IIRC. Or you could probably find the whole assembly and swap it in.
