Default filter material for air filter box

hi i have been finding bits of filter material in dash vents. So I took air filter out and underneath surrounding the inside of the box was this filter material that has since disintegrated. can someone tell me where to find a replacement as I have looked and cannot find it anywhere. btw, its on my 1997 318ti.

Pelican Parts has them. They are not cheap any where since they are a one model wonder damn BMW for not using the standard E36 heater in our cars...

are u talking about the cabin filters? cause thats not it. the one Im talking about sits underneath the air filter as well as above it inside the lid of the box where the filter is. the bottom one sits around the inside of the box where the air filter sits in. both are held in place by a plastic framework.

If you're talking about the airbox right behind the headlight you shouldn't be noticing anything in the dash vents as that feeds air into the engine not the blower motor for the cars hvac system. The cabin airfilters should sit in a plastic frame directly above the blower motor, in between the dash and firewall directly in the center. Which are you talking about in your posts? You have to be specific on stuff like this or you'll end up being led in the wrong direction.

Ahha! Ok,, Only the standard air filter goes in the air box, some cars have an insulation layer in the box,, remove it. It gets dried out and falls apart.. and the engine eats it...

Yep, I believe that's the sound-deadening foam you're describing. Not needed at all and doesn't really do much to begin with.

Default Filter material for air filter box

Hello everybody,

I removed all that material about a year ago in my 1996 318ti because it was falling apart... after removing it, nothing happened or changed.
That material basically covers all the inside walls of the air filter box, but it seems not to do anything at all...
If that material is breaking apart, do your car a favor and get rid of it before it ends up inside the engine.

I hope this helps

Note: The material is held inside the box by a plastic frame that can be detached from the air filter box, just be careful.

That material was too thin be of any use, either to deaden sound or insulate, imo. John
