Default Time to retire

I have a 96 318 with 120k that has been giving me headaches since I got it at 80k.

In addition to over $3k in repairs it's only get about 18MPG in my short city driving (I'm a student).

Now it's leaking oil all over the place and running like a lawnmower. Mechanic tells me it needs to eng mounts and some head work will cost over $1300 just to stop the leak and run smooth.

I did a bluebook the car is valued at $1200 in excellent condition.

I'm really worried about dumping more money in than having more problems (xmission)...

Turns out because it failed smog I can get $1500 from state to retire.
Is it time to retire this vehicle?

Well it depends, first you said 318, sooo is it a compact? I assume that since your on the .org that its a ti? Or is it a 318is or 318i - sunroof? 5spd?

How is the interior? Exterior? What is the 3k worth of maintenance you have done to it?

In general a 318 is the least desirable e36, and most e36's you won't get money back for modding it, or anything else.

That being said if you can add more detail to what you mentioned (above questions) it would be easier to help you decide if its worth it or not.

**oil leak can be from valve cover gasket - are you driving it on low oil or refilling? Motor mounts are easy to replace, and as for 18mpg, that does suck but even with a m44 if its cold and you have bad driving habits - especially city - the gas mileage can suck**

It is a 318ti.
Actually I like to drive it but the oil leak scares me.
I can only date deaf gals because it looks good but sounds like a lawnmower.

I was quoted $600 for the leak, my guess is it is the valve cover gasket.
Does $600 sound right?

Also was quoted $400 for engine mounts.

Thanks

Valve cover gasket is about $50, takes about 1 hr to replace as a beginner. Engine mounts: $50, requires a jack and loosening 4 nuts, 15 mins job.

Valve cover gasket is a DIY job.
I've done 2 so far and I am now mechanic by far.

You probably need the oil filter housing o-rings, gasket and bushing replace.
