I think I answered my own question... | Hahaha, I must have racked my brain for atleast an hour on this one. I get what you're saying about offset, I think the reason it's so close is due to the design of the style 5 spokes. They could of just as easily made them thinner, but I think they just had the 5 series brakes in mind. I also think that the only reason they rubbed on my M3 calipers is because the pads are brand new. The calipers are self-centering which means that when I apply the brakes, the caliper gets drawn towards the rotor and centers itself on the carrier. As the pads wear down, the caliper should gain more clearance from the wheel spokes. But yeah, since the offset is a full 20mm lower than 3 series wheels, you'd think that there should be that much more clearance. M3 calipers are just too big and were never intended to run with 5 series wheels. I had to grind even more material off of the calipers to get them to clear the inside of the wheels. I masked off the ///M's and repainted them. They have about 2mm of clearance now and will gain more as the pads wear. The paint came out perfect, you can't even tell that they were redone. Today was spent bleeding the brakes and clutch systems. I flushed all of the old crap out and filled with ATE Super Blue racing fluid. I installed a new UUC Stainless clutch line along with the M3 slave cylinder. It took a few tries to bleed all of the air out of the clutch system since I basically dumped all of the old fluid. Right now the pedal hits the floor with no resistance at all, but I think that's because there's no clutch or transmission installed yet. I think for now, I'm gonna leave the 318ti clutch master cylinder since I'm using the M3 slave cylinder. According to UUC, the M3 setup will make the clutch pedal feel mushy with the stage 2 flywheel/M5 clutch. We'll see how it feels with the steel braided line, 318Ti master cyl, M3 slave cyl, e34 M5 clutch & throwout bearing, 8.5lb flywheel & ZF transmission. If it feels mushy, I'll switch back to the 318ti slave cylinder. I'm using the M3 brake master cylinder/ABS pump. I didn't expect to have problems with the brakes clearing the centers though. Not to mention the months of getting jerked around by the powdercoating shops. Unfortunately one of the wheels still has some flaws. They sandblasted too deep leaving a rough texture, then they powder coated multiple coats to smooth out the roughness. When I torqued the gold bolts down on that wheel, the powdercoat bubbled up around each of the bolts It's only that one wheel and I'm so sick of dealing with those people I'll just get another wheel, have it done at another shop and use the messed up one as a spare. The powder coating shop screwed up too many times trying to shoot the centers gold. I'm happly with the overall look, but as I mentioned to Stephen, one of them isn't perfect. Those are my old style 42's!!! I sold those to Gino for 150 bucks and then he sold his car with those still on it The style 5's are the same fitment as the 42's(17x8 et20), but I'm runnin 235's on the style 5's. If you want to keep the oem look on the body then I can understand. If you pull it out more, you will have the weird curled look. I actually love the tires. Nice tread. Oh and I've been good man. Just trying to get the ti back on the road. Got a little cash to straighten out the frame, but some b.s. always comes up. Looking for a good shop. Mckenna has new body shop that have certified BMW, Porche, and VW body work. Not sure about their work. Went to talk to someone and they were kind of snobby??? __________________ Road to redemption... I actually beat the rear wheel arches out with a block of wood and a sledge hammer to fit the style 42's and you can see in that pic that they barely fit with 215/40's. It still rubbed on hard takeoffs, but not that bad. The only way to fit these bigger tires is to go widebody which is my next step. Tomorrow I'm gonna put the car on the ground and take measurments, then it's chop time I'll be cutting the wheel arches off of the fenders and quarter panels, then welding a custom fabricated e30 M3 style widebody onto the existing fenders Also, I still have that M3 chassis bro. So if you want me to cut off the frame rails or anything and save them for you, just LMK. | | | 10-03-2009, 02:05 PM | #492 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | You have to take pics of the hacking, something i definitely want to see. My widebody won't be anything extreme. The top of the arch will be really close to where it is right now, maybe one or two centimeters out(I'll probably run spacers). Should look exactly like the e30 M3. Here's a couple pics of the rear fitment from today: w/o centercap w/centercap the front should sit flush with the tire once the motor is in Last edited by cooljess76; 10-04-2009 at 12:25 AM. | | | 10-04-2009, 12:23 AM | #494 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | wow that looks amazing. | | | 10-04-2009, 01:25 AM | #495 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Looks good so far.
