Default transmission pump?

I have been doing some pretty extensive research on the transmission pump. I have yet to come to a concrete answer as to where the pump is located. some people say that the pump is internally located inside the tranny and some others say that the pump is the actual torque converter. The problem that I am having is that my transmission is a not engaging into any gear at all. I think that it may be be as easy as buying a torque converter before spending the money on a tranny that may cost me up to 800-900$ after shipping as opposed to just buying a used torque converter from zionsville for 100$ after shipping. I really need some advice if anyone has any past experiences or just any knowledge in this area. I can't stand the sight of my ti parked any longer!

I don't know much about automatics, but I've never heard anyone use the term "transmission pump" before. I've looked through the parts diagrams at realoem.com and there's a part called a "pulse generator" (24151219659). I have no idea what it does. There are also a bunch of solenoids in there for various things. Maybe you need the Pressure Regulator Solenoid Valve? It looks to be a $300 to $400 part. Do you have any codes? I believe a dealership could use their diagnostic equipment to help you nail down the problem. The transmission also has control unit that could be the problem. You don't want to know how much that is. Good luck.

I went to the place bmw lay to rest today. I finally just broke down and spent the money on a transmission. The reason I was asking the question was because the transmission fluid has to flow somehow and most of the time there are pumps that make that happen. I didnt get any flow of fuid through the tranny so I figured the "pump" was bad. What I can do is tear the tranny apart and see what went wrong and let all of you know just for future reference.

The pump is the first section after the torque converter,
its wrapped around the input shaft. It has to be because it always
has to turn to make any of the rest of teh transmition work.

BTW the BMW auto tranny is pretty much the same as the Auto
used in most Japanes luxury sports cars that are rear wheel drive...

Its a ZF/Borg Warner derivitive.

so, lets say that my torque converter was being shoved into the input shaft of the transmission because when I did my motor swap I didn't notice the pilot bearing taking the place of the bushing in the fron of the torque converter (engine came from a manual and I installed it into an automatic).... would that cause the pump to go out on it?

So the engine was out of a manual trans car,,,
And you forgot to pull the pilot bushing out?

Auto's don't need a pilot bushing. The flywheel or torque converter sometimes have a stub that fits in the hole.

If the converter did not seat to the flywheel properly you likely shoved on the front of the pump and its toast.

The pump can usually be replaced by pulling the tranny and its held in by a ring of bolts around the input shaft, BUT,,, If you hammered it bad you pumped shrapnel into the tranny and its likely going to cause the tranny to die in the near future. You'd need to pull the pump and examine its innards for metal bits.

Good luck.

What I said was that when I got a new motor it came from a manual. It still had the pilot bearing in it and I didn't see it. so my pilot bushing was being pressed against the pilot bearing tha wasn't supposed to be there. and yes you are right my transmission did go out so I had to go pick up another one from the only local strip yard 60 miles away.
