I've always liked the BMW grills the way they are because it's a distinguishing characteristic of the BMW styling.
The graphite part looks a lot better than I'd have expected. I'd definitely vote against the outer part being black because that would clash with the plastic trim parts on the bumper. Of course, you could always put some "Forever Black" on the trim parts to make them blacker, but the painted black part of the grill would still be blacker. Still... neither would be as black as the Spinal Tap album, "Smell the Glove" because there are none more black.
The red slats also look better than I'd have expected. I suspect that this sort of thing might not look as good on a lighter-colored car, e.g. white or grey.
