Default Engine Searching

I have a 1995 Ti with 110K mile on it and just recently it has some new habits. I live in Michigan where it is still cold and in the morning the car starts right up but has a hard time idling and will even stall once in a while. It starts right back up and as long as I give it a little gas it seems to run fine.

As it warms it runs much better and does not hesitate but at idle the engine will slowly start to pick up RPM for about 500 RPMs and then very quickly drop back down where it will start doing the same thing again. It also has a tendency to start its idle at a much higher RPM and I need to hit the gas to have it drop down.

Finally, at three different times and dates, the "Check Engine" light came on while at idle. As soon as I touched the gas pedel the light has gone off.

I changed the sparkplugs (to Autolite Platinum) thinking that it might be the problem. The old Bosch ones looked like normal with no real issues shown. I change the oil on a very regular basis and the car does take a little oil between oil changes but I am not sure if that is from small leaks and/or slight burning.

The only other thing I can say is that the exhaust does have an odor that I have not smelled before... but not a smell where I know why it is happening (it does not smell like burning oil or anything).

Any help or sugguestions would be very welcome...

did you get the codes pulled? would likely give you a clue as to what's going on.

check the rubber boot on your intake for cracks, looks carefully, the pleats can hide smaller cracks
