If everything is in order, the ICV should regulate the idle @ about 700-900 rpm. | | | 09-05-2010, 10:23 PM | #620 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: VIRGINIA Posts: 324 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak it's a club you have a better sense of humor than my dad, he didn't find that sticker quite as funny | My bad! Going from your other posts, I'll just throw this out there, but you should check your intake boot for cracks/tears. Sometimes there'll be small hairline cracks hidden between the ribs of the boot which will allow air in. This will cause all sorts of idle probs and in some/most cases will throw a misfire or manufacturers air/fuel metering code. Your MAF tells the ECU how much air is entering the engine. The ECU will then tell your fuel injectors how many milliseconds they need to stay open. If there's any difference in air volume than is reported to the ECU, your air/fuel mixture will be off and the engine won't run properly. The best way to troubleshoot this is to use a can of brake/parts cleaner(not carb cleaner) and spray it on and around the intake boot while the car is idleing. Don't be stingy, soak that sucker. If there's a leak, the fumes from the brake cleaner will get sucked in through the leak and ignite in combustion chamber which will cause the engine to rev and the idle to fluctuate. It's a simple way to diagnose a vacuum or intake boot leak. You can also spray it up under the intake manifold(not the airbox), if there's a leak under there, the same thing will happen. Once you hear the idle fluctuate, you've found your leak. This is of course assuming that you have a leak. Second guess would be a clogged CCV valve or otherwise a clogged orifice on the valve cover. If you remove the CCV, there's a really good chance it'll break apart in your hand. They're made of plastic and become very brittle over the years. Sometimes you could hear them hissing when they go bad. Best wishes and good luck Last edited by cooljess76; 09-06-2010 at 01:53 AM. | | | 09-06-2010, 02:28 AM | #623 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: TN Posts: 216 | ok ccv = pcv right? i looked for cracks in the boot and didn't see any. the icv was pretty clear before i cleaned it today and the thing a ma bobber inside of it moved freely. but the whole issue with it was that it ran fine then i parked it a couple months ago then i started driving it again ( had to jump at off due to the battery being low) now that i am driving it every day i am tring to get it back top notch like it was. and i had a switch go bad tonight i think my interior lights stay on like a door is open. so tomorrow i will track it down i think tonight i am just going to go find the fuse and pull it so i don't drain the battery again. If you look at driver's side rear of the valve cover, you'll see a hose going from the valve cover to the CCV. The CCV is a black disc shaped valve with a slit on the bottom of it. Often times, when the valve goes bad, you can hear it hissing from the slit. If you put your finger over the slit, you can hear it change notes. But like I said before, I'd try the brake cleaner trick on the intake boot and vacuum hoses before I went messin with anything else. | | | 09-06-2010, 02:36 AM | #625 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: TN Posts: 216 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 Yeah, BMW calls it the crank case vent valve.
