Been busy with other projects. I'm still not confident with the cam timing. I've done it twice already because I second guessed my first attempt. Then when I redid it, well Everything lined up when I installed the tool, but after I torqued everything down, I rotated the crank a couple times and tried to reinstall the tool to make sure it it kept it's alignment and the tool wouldn't go back on perfectly. It's been festering in the back of my mind for the past couple of months, so I think I'm going to purchase or borrow the correct tools and do it again once the engine is in the car. As soon as this part is finished, the engine will be ready to drop in. Need to order another vanos gasket and safety wire the oil pump nut. | | | 09-22-2010, 07:20 AM | #589 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | I expect it to be done by tomorrow 5 am. | | | 09-22-2010, 09:27 AM | #590 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: LA, Bellflower, CA Posts: 3,613 | Jesse, as we all admire your work and progress on the 332tii project we are giving you two weeks MAX to finish up. I have the vanos wrench, cam locking pin, chain tensioner, and head bolt socket in the tool box at home. You can borrow em for the cost of shipping and a 6pack for dad as incentive to get em shipped out. Not deposit necessary, I trust you FWIW I timed mine the first time with no vanos wrench and it was fine, but I installed the spare vanos I had and it was bad and actually robbing me of power (when I disconnected the electrical to the vanos it would drive normal). The wrench makes it much easier __________________ 1995 318TI base. 95 2.5L from 325IS. S50 cams+pistons, e36 M3 front brakes. H&R race springs F+R. It's almost finished, looks like a really fancy ashtray right now. Marv, I already told you you could take the style 5's if you want. I have a set of e39 style 19's that I want to refinish and install anyway, just need a set of tires. Neal, I dunno if it's natural or not. I just listen and feel the sound and vibration that the machine makes. I will say being ambidextrous helps tremendously. James, My arms are sore. Each pass on the mill only removes about .005 of an inch, about the thickness of a fine human hair. Between this and playing Disc Golf, I don't know how much momentum I have left, lol. Remember it's a manual mill, not a CNC, so you have to turn the wheel about 20 times to make the table move about 6 inches. budget76, I'll definitely take you up on that offer. I already have the Vanos wrench. Need to check, but I don't think my LTW flywheel has a hole for the crank locking tool. I'd like to get ahold of one of those gauges that tells you where TDC is(or maybe it reads valve clearance?). Here's where I think I messed up, I didn't have the chain tensioner, so I stuck a ratchet handle through the hole and had a friend apply steady pressure while I tightened the cam sprocket bolts. The other thing that might have messed me up was the aluminum plate that I cutout from the template in the haynes manual might have flexed while I was tightening the bolts. Now that I have the milling machine and some thicker material, I should be able to make a sturdier cam locking tool. But I will need the chain tensioner and maybe the crank locking pin if you have them. Neal, yeah I torqued them in a criss cross patern in increments, I think the tool I made might have flexed, allowing one of the cams to move ever so slightly. Brendan, hahaha. I didn't have any loctite, so I just cross threaded the bolts. I go by the rule "a cross thread is a tight thread".
