Can't quite make out to see the tops of your tires are flush with the wheels in the pic. Are they? So if I used H&R sports, which are 1.5 drop in the front, they would most likely not rub w/the 215's? And they probably wouldn't rub during hard auto-x-ing? What do you think? I'm looking at a 1.25 inch drop in the rear. Do you think I could go with the larger 215/45/17 for both f & r? Thanks for your opinion.

anything larger than 215/40/17 won't fit without extensive fender modifications. Even a 215/40 will require rolling the rear fenders if your car is lowered. Of course this is assuming you're referring to 17x8 et20 e39 fitment wheels.

Yes, that's the fitment in question. Thanks

FWIW, 215/40 is only a mild stretch on a 17x8" wheel. It's barely even noticeable. However, the ride is going to be a little harsher than a 215/45 due to the sidewall being shorter. But what you lose in comfort, you gain in performance. There's a trade off. Some will say that 215 is too skinny for a car equipped with an S50/S52, I disagree. A good quality high performance summer tire will give the same grip as a wider all season touring tire. Then of course you'll get those who say "just get wheels that fit", and they're absolutely correct. Unfortunately there's no OEM or aftermarket wheels that will give you both dish AND lip that will fit with wide tires. DSI's are 17x7.5, DSII's have lip but no dish, Contours same thing, LTW's same thing and they're all 1 piece wheels. That's what makes e39 wheels(style 5's, style 19's, style 32's and style 42's) look so good, the dish & lip.

Thanks for the excellent info. Very informative and helpful. Ever since I started this project, I've been looking for the perfect wheel, tire combo. It's not easy trying to find a stylish, good looking, lightweight, strong combo that can be used for daily driving, hard auto-X and maybe the occasional track day. I have two sets now but they're not ideal. My Z3 donor has style 18's that are 7.5x17 & 8.5x17. My Ti has style 30's with 225/50/16 that are only 7" wide from a 328is. I"m not crazy about either set and I think the style 18's are probably too heavy, not sure. Anywho, I'll most likely sell both sets and keep looking for the ideal set. Back to the old drawing board, LOL! This is like learning a whole new language coming from motorcycle racing. Thanks again.

Here are better pics of the style 5's on my Ti. I am running 215/45/17 in the fronts, and 205/40/17 in the rears. Dropped about 2 inches, minor rubbing on the rear on turns.

There's a few staggered sets floating around. They're somewhat rare. No way they'll fit on a ti without extensive fender modifications, stretched tires and possibly a widebody.

I've never seen a 17x9 style 19, however I have seen a custom staggered set. The dude took a pair of e36 style 19's and a pair of e39 style 19's and matched them up. I've seen that done with style 5's as well and you still end up with a square set of 17x8's which is better IMO for the sake of rotating tires.
