Default Stupid Question, but I am a new owner

Hey, I just bought a 1998 BMW 318ti with 111k miles. Car runs great! However, I don't have an owners manual for the car.

So, here is the question:
It is an automatic and to the left of the "gear" shifter there are two buttons with "A" and "M" written on them, respectively. What do they stand for? What do they do?

Thanks,
Tony
