We've been building and selling these kits for E30 M42's to fund our racing habit and have developed a PnP kit that allows M42/M44 owners to install a Coil On Plug conversion for about the price of a coil pack and new set of wires. Let me know your interest. For those of you not familiar with my or the car you can get more details on the only TURBO M42 in BMW Club Racing. here at www.hqautosport.com Rob. Feel free to PM or e-mail any questions! | | | 08-18-2010, 12:10 AM | #2 | Member Join Date: Aug 2010 Location: Carlsbad, CA Posts: 47 | As Rob mentioned above, we tested a prototype plug & play Coil On Plug kit on an early E36 M42 powered 318i and it worked great. We need to test our plug & play kit on an E36 M44 318ti. We need one participant to confirm that this kit works on M44's. We are located in Southern California (South Orange County). It could take as little as 15 minutes once you get to our shop if everything goes well. Plan on spending at least an hour with us. We could do this either this weekend or next weekend. Please email me if your interested at paul@hqautosport.com As Rob mentioned, if you are not familiar with our COP kit or our Turbo M42 club race car you can get more information at www.hqautosport.com Last edited by e30pq; 08-18-2010 at 12:20 AM. | | | 08-18-2010, 01:27 AM | #3 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | Looks like some very interesting work you guys have been doing. Anything you could ship and I could figure out on my own? What are the benefits vs. current single coil and wires? Any real world test data from the M42? TIA... | | | 08-18-2010, 02:14 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | It is really about simplifying the entire spark system. You no longer have to maintain expensive to replace plug wires. The shorter distance between the coil and the plug could also result in slightly less energy drop on the spark due to less resistance. You can also replace individual coils as they go bad instead of having to replace the entire coil pack. It also allows for a lot more room in the engine bay to be able to do a side mounted turbo. Not a huge horsepower thing, but it definitely has its advantages. | | | 08-18-2010, 02:19 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Lancaster PA Posts: 274 | Happy to be a guinea pig... | | | 08-18-2010, 03:34 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: MD Posts: 126 | I too would love to try these out, but am on the wrong coast. Keep us posted on how things work with the M44 and I'll probably end up buying a set as my current wires are getting a little old. | | | 08-18-2010, 03:38 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | I'd be a test mule also, I'm also on the wrong coast. I have a set of brand new coils though. Just need the harness and the hardware. __________________ No more ti. | | | 08-18-2010, 05:29 PM | #10 | Member Join Date: Aug 2010 Location: Carlsbad, CA Posts: 47 | We appreciate all the interest. For this first test we really would like to work "hands-on" to make sure we get our homework right. As "mohaughn" said above, those are some of the key benefits. Most of our customers go with our kit because it a more cost effective solution long-term vs. the coil pack that BMW provided stock. Some do it to make some space for a top mount turbo (which is why we went Coil On Plug on our race car). Some claim better throttle response but we haven't done a before and after on a dyno to make any definitive claim. The M44 Plug and Play kit will be a little more expensive than the M42 COP kit due to the custom wiring harness we are building with BMW parts. The main advantage of the plug and play kit will be the ability to turn your car back to stock easily. We will also offer an M44 hardwire solution for slightly less than the M44 plug and play. The M44 hardwire solution will require some wiring (ie some cutting into your wiring harness). | | | 08-18-2010, 05:36 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Lancaster PA Posts: 274 | What are we talking about here price wise? Please check our website for all the details of the M42 COP kit. www.hqautosport.com The M44 Plug & Play kit includes everything from the M42 kit plus the custom wiring harness. The price will be $350 The M44 Hardwire kit includes everything from the M42 kit plus a custom wiring harness that requires a little work on your end. The price for the hardwire kit will be $275. All of our kits come with a 1 year warranty on the coils, and step by step color installation instructions.
