Let me preface this by telling you that in this part of SoCal we see about 20 days of cold+rain a year. That leaves 300+ days a year of beating sunshine and humidity under 20%. Yesterday was the first time in 6months+ that I did not drive my car or even start it. Yesterday also happened to be the first day in about 8 months that it rained. Today was the coldest day that we have seen in about 8 months also. (it was so cold that I had to wear a sweater out during the day, and I had to start a fire at about 3pm cause it was so damn cold(thats like below 50)) Tonight when I went to start my car it chugged a bit and then died, 3 or 4 times, throwing the CEL It acted just like my sisters 74 karmann ghia every morning, where you need to give it some gas for 25-30sec before you haul ass down the driveway to build a little heat. Once it got warm it was fine. The engine is in great condition, but after reading other posts about dying engines, im sure that the spark plugs, icu, tb and fuel filter need cleaning or changing, which i will be doing before the end of the year. Any tips from you cold weather ppl I should know about? | | | 11-04-2008, 03:14 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | mine used to do that, the intake boot was cracked and when it got cold the rubber would contract, making the hole bigger, have you checked your intake boot? | | | 11-04-2008, 04:45 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Denver, Colorado Posts: 3,212 | yeah i would check the boot. I had that happen to me a couple of times. I didn't know what it was found out later it could of been the boot. I changed it and when i bent the boot a little there was a big tear along the bottoem of it. | | | 11-04-2008, 08:31 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2008 Location: San Diego Posts: 180 | by intake boot do you mean this? or the thing that sticks out toward the front of the car that is attached to the box i have circled? | | | 11-04-2008, 09:31 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | What did the CEL say? I'm thinking it may be a temp sensor of some sort. Air intake or coolant temp. I've started my ti down as low as -30F, so it'll run fine if all is well. | | | 11-05-2008, 01:36 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | it's the rubber boot that goes from the throttle body to the MAF, the part you circled is the airbox | | | 11-05-2008, 02:19 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2008 Location: San Diego Posts: 180 | Quote: Originally Posted by CirrusSR22 What did the CEL say? It was a little warmer today, and i started it long after the rains had left. It chugged a bit, then was fine when I gave it a little gas Is this the boot? if it is the part, then it is totally starting to wear, in fact, it was the only piece on the engine that looked a little warn when I got the car. | | | 11-05-2008, 08:56 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2008 Location: San Diego Posts: 180 | as long as it is not raining, ill be ripping apart the whole air intake system my goal is to get down as far as the icv ( or whatever that part is called that is under the manifold) I doubt I will get that far, but I will at least give the maf a good clean hopefully that will help I cant find any cracks in the boot, so i will continue with the general tune up, plugs, etc (all that **** pumping air into my engine) ill let you know how it goes | | | 11-14-2008, 01:46 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2008 Location: San Diego Posts: 180 | ok, i finally had a little time to take a look at this no cracks in the boot, I gave it a good clean as I inspected it as I know it has never been changed. To my shock the thing is in great condition. I did notice that the piece connecting it to the ICV was sticking out about half an inch, I pushed it back in, and it sat fine. Im thinking that was the problem I also found a very tiny crack on the actual hose going to the ICV it is very small, so Im just going to replace both those connections when I have the whole upper manifold off this weekend Thanks for the tips guys!!! | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
