It is on and off, but when the engine is running, if I pull the oil dipstick, the whistle stops, put it back in and whistle starts. I can hear the air pressure release when I pull the dipstick. Is this a bad vacuum leak? I thought it might have been a pulley bearing, it's that loud, but now I think it's vacuum related. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so where was the leak, or was it something more expensive than a loose hose, like a pump or something? Check engine light comes on and tells me to replace my O2 sensor (lambda for those across the pond) but it's not 6 months old. Car also runs terrible when whistle is present. Thanks for any help. This "whistling" might be that elusive sound I've been tracking for two years now. Happens when the car is hot and the throttle is blipped. | __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 12-26-2005, 09:34 PM | #4 | Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Missouri Posts: 12 | Great, that was fast. I took the intake manifold off and checked for leaks, found nothing. I cleaned out the idle control valve and it was half closed but didn't check to see if it was stuck. Thanks for the info, maybe I can steal the icv off of my audi and try it. Thanks cali-ti, I'll post again when I figure anything out. | | | 01-06-2006, 06:08 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Missouri Posts: 12 | Problem solved. The service guys at Suntrup BMW in St. Louis called it my hooter valve. In case anyone else has this problem here is a review of what was happening. A very loud whine (vacuum leak) was coming from somewhere around the intake manifold, the whine would stop if I took out the oil dipstick or oil fill cap off of valve cover. The car would idle very rough and I was getting the old check engine light (O2 sensor) at idle. The problem was the crankcase valve (hooter valve), it is the black plastic piece on the spacer between the upper intake manifold and the lower intake manifold, and has the hose going around back to the valve cover. It has 2 allen head screws holding it on, very easy fix. Just thought I'd alert everyone and actually finish a thread, and not leave the problem out there. | | | 01-06-2006, 06:20 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | Breeze, thanks for the follow-up.
