Looking for the 1.9l camshaft locking tool and crank dowel/pin. Wanting to either borrow or purchase used. If borrowing, I could send you $50 bucks deposit via paypal or something that would be satisfactory til I returned the tool and you make say $25 or so. Also, I'll cover shipping both ways UPS. I have my own account there to make that happen. : ) I'm at the stage in my refresh that I need to pull the timing chain. Any help would be greatly appreciated. | | | 04-26-2011, 04:33 PM | #2 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Chapel Hill, NC, USA Posts: 14 | Did you ever figure something out? I also have a M44 with the head in the trunk. I was thinking of going ahead without the tool, but haven't figured out how bad of an idea that is yet. I was just replacing the head gasket, so the chain is still on at the bottom, and I wired the cam sprocket to the chain before I took it loose. So, I probably could just set the block to TDC, put the head at TDC with the #1 cam lobes facing up and inward, then lower it on and reattach the sprockets so the bolt heads are in the middle of the slotted holes. But this might be slightly off... | | | 04-26-2011, 05:53 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: Gulfport, Florida Posts: 3,208 | If you look at the cam sprockets they have arrows on the front that should point up. If you look at the back of the sprocket you will most likely see a oil mark that matches the cam exactly so you can line up where the sprocket was before you took it apart and then mark it on the front bolt side for when you put it together. You do not want to in stall the sprockets with the mindset of bolting them halfway will make them degree correctly. If you can't finn the old marks where the dams were bolted on the sprocket them you need to TDC and lock the back cam squares at TDC | | | 04-26-2011, 08:50 PM | #4 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Chapel Hill, NC, USA Posts: 14 | That's a great point, thanks! The oil "shadow" on the back of the sprocket wasn't easy to see initially, but with a flashlight it's really clear. Photos here: https://picasaweb.google.com/stanlwi...eat=directlink One more main concern before I feel ready to reassemble... neither the Bentley nor any of the writeups I've read online (the best being this one: http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11162 ) mention having to take off the lower timing cover. However, my upper and lower timing gaskets seem to be one piece, as visible in the photos linked above. My replacement looks the same. So, I obviously can't reassemble using the same old gasket since I've mangled it, and I can't imagine others have been doing so either. What am I missing here? | | | 04-26-2011, 10:27 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | I have the camshaft locking tool, flywheel locking tool, and rigid chain tensioner. You can borrow it. Send me a PM and I'll let you know the details. | | | 04-26-2011, 11:05 PM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Chapel Hill, NC, USA Posts: 14 | I really appreciate the offer! | | | 04-26-2011, 11:05 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Chapel Hill, NC, USA Posts: 14 | Unfortunately, I have to have a post count of 5 before I can send PMs. | | | 04-26-2011, 11:06 PM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Chapel Hill, NC, USA Posts: 14 | Number 5!!!!!!!!!!!! | | | 04-26-2011, 11:12 PM | #9 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: Chapel Hill, NC, USA Posts: 14 | Well, that didn't do it.
