Default gonna be an expensive day.

took the car in a couple of hours ago to have an oil service and run a few checks on my shaky suspention.

got a call a few minutes ago and not only do i need some major work on my front suspention, but ive got a broken rear coil too. so i'm getting it all replaced. its for the best but whoever owns VISA is gonna sleep a bit better tonight!

i'll update with anything else thats broken.

time to start servicing yourself!

rear springs, easy!
front rotors and pads, easy!
front bulbs, easy!
oil change, easy!
controls arms and control arm bushings (i'm guessing that's what they're replacing) - not so easy (due to having to "glue" them and get them down on the ground within 30 mins - and pressing them on)

oil change better be part of inspection 2 yeah, it's gonna hurt ... should have gotten the meyle control arms and some m3 offset bushings while you were at it

i forgot ball joints and drop links.

total £704.53 inc VAT.

matt, i took it to Kiplings Motor Factors in Bushey. they are straight guys and i got to look at all the broken bits when i arrived to pick it up.

cant believe the difference in ride. much more comfortable and no shakiness under braking.

gutted that ive lost the "lowered" look that the car had while the suspension was $hagged though.

Shaking while braking is a really good indication that you need to replace the lower control arm bushings. The shaking was worse for me when lightly applying the brakes, then it stopped as I applied more pressure.

LCAB - shaking with light braking
Rotors - shaking with light and heavy braking.

Good work with getting your car straightened out!

i think it's also indicative in where you feel it ... typically warped rotors will cause pulsing in the brake pedal vs feeling it only in the steering wheel (LCABs, ball joints, other steering bits).

Yes, very true. Although ball joints don't feel like LCABs, in my experience. When ball joints go, you feel them when you hit small bumps in the road. Like pulling into the driveway, you feel a bit of a disconnect from the wheel when you hit the elevation change. Sooo....

LCAB - shaking with light braking, feel it in the steering wheel.
Rotors - shaking with light and heavy braking, feel it in the pedal and the steering wheel
Ball Joints - Mushy, loose disconnect when going over low speed bumps. Feel it in the wheel (kinda).

Feel free to add to the list of symptoms!

trying to remember if the bad ball joints caused some noticeable bump steer as well and possibly the shiftiness in steering over grooved roads. i had the meyle metal ball joints and m3 offset LCABs done at the same time so that fixed it all ... and that was probably 3 years ago. my memory sux ...

Yes, most noticeable over railroad tracks and the like. I'm not sure about bump steer, but it's possible. I think it depends if your upper or lower ball joints are bad. Hopefully the Meyle HD metal ball joints last forever, I was replacing outside ball joints ever 10k-15k miles!
