Default M42 / M44 - Differences? Preferences?

M42
- OBD I
- 1,796 cc
- 84 mm bore
- 81 mm stroke
- 10.0:1 compression ratio
- 138 hp @ 6,000 rpm
- 129 ft-lb @ 4,500 rpm

M44
- OBD II
- 1,895 cc
- 85 mm bore
- 83.5 mm stroke
- 10.0:1 compression ratio
- 138 hp @ 6000 RPM
- 133 lb-ft @ 4300 RPM

M42 engines are easier to play with. Chip, exhaust and intake mods are more responsive and noticeable. This is because of OBDI.
BMW seem to have "wringed-out" all they can for power out of the M44 engines, but I can feel the difference in the higher torque.
Unfortunately, we (Stateside) don't get the cool 4 cylinders from Europe like he 2.0L turbodiesel, not even te torquey 1.6L.

the M44 has some updated parts in the timing chain system that will last longer.

My engine is an m44 but is a 1,796 cc.
how is this possible? uk spec maybe?

Simple. They are wrong.
The M42 is a 1.8.
The M44 is a 1.9.

Check the owners manual......

M42 has a AFM

M44 has a HFM


HFM meters seem to be better for aftermaket induction uses,

I lean more toward M42. Slap a lower compression HG and boost away...

Found it M42/44 has hydraulic lifters.

Has anyone ever converted to solid lifters...I am considering building an S42 engine.

Step one ITBs coming winter

if your v5 says it is 1796 its an m42.
