99 5 spd. I turn 3200rpm at 70 Mph. 17in wheels. Since fill up, have travelled 208 miles and not quite at the half tank mark. Will report back when light comes on. Beginning to suspect accuracy of pump at QT station.

How do we know that the "light" is more accurate than the pump?

I'm very interested in this swap. Please elaborate.

What freeway, speed, rpm gears.
What MPG do you see with 3.45 open vs 2.93 LSD?
Did you make any other changes to rim or tire?

I just pulled 34+ mpg
highway drive 75mph at 3500 rpm
5 speed
195/65 15 tires
Style 6 Rims
380K miles on original drivetrain

Default Fuel economy

I finally got the reserve light to illuminate. When it came on, the needle was nearing the middle of the orange range. The odometer read 383.7. Before you get too excited, I think there are some errors involved. Using 11.6 gallons as the trigger, that mileage came to 33.07MPG ( OBC calculated 33.6 ). I drove 17 more miles to fill up. That should have taken .5 gallons. The fill up should have required a little over 12 gallons, but the pump said 13.4. Using this amount (13.4 to cover 400.4 miles). The economy was 29.9 MPG.

I think there is some error in almost all areas, the pump accuracy, the odometer, and the point at which the light comes on..

BTW, I learned that the OBC can be trimmed once you figure out your true economy.

Wheel size 245/40 17.

All stock 1997 318ti Manual with stock DASC supercharger,
I do a 300 mile highway run, sea level to 4500 ft lots of ups and downs,
Cruise set at 74 MPH verified by GPS NOT speedo,
29 to 32 MPH at that speed,
Lower speeds on highway, Well I really dont know
But I bet better.

Default Fuel Economy

Ok, I am fairly new to the forum within the last couple months and would first and foremost like to thank the members that make this such a great website and wealth of invaluable information. I wanted to share my surprising fuel economy numbers... I am elated and confused at the same time...

I have only owed this car for about 3 1/2 months and have put about 4-5K miles on the car. I have the OBC and have also been tracking my mileage via GPS and calucalting my mileage manually and my OBC seems to be very accurate within about a 1/2 MGP or less. Anyways on to the good news, I am consistently* getting 38 MPG or better. The first time I tested this I filled up, reset the OBC for the first time and headed from Colorado Springs CO to Breckenridge Ski lot. Got 38.1 MPG round trip including city driving through COS both ways. Ok, so this is nice. The last tank I read up on Hypermiling and am currently getting 40.1 MPG in the city!!! WTH??? I routinely get 450+ miles per tank before the light comes on. This is a mix of city and HWY. For the record, when I got the car, the OBC showed 31MPG...I drove it like it was stolen for the first week for so and it was all the way down to 28MPG before first reset. I have done the following - cleaned the K&N air filter, changed the spark plugs to the NGK 4 prong ones, SeaFoamed through the vac line, Added a can of BG 44k to the gas tank and changed oil to Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic. I Run 93 Octane E10 from Diamond Shamrock. BTW Elevation here is 6500 ft and in the mountains is 10K plus feet on some passes. I heard that we lose power, but gain fuel economy here, so maybe this is true.

My question is this... Can anyone here please tell me why I appear to be getting 20-30% better than most have reported here? Is there a hamster in my car or something? I can probably post a video or something showing my gps mileage, car mileage and OBC for verification since I understand if some doubt this. I too was doubtful at first.

Mileage * Tank capacity = Miles driven

Your hypermilling:
40.1MPG * 15.7G = 629 miles and out of gas
Or
40.1MPG * 13 G = 521 miles and fuel light comes on

Your 450 miles before light comes on:
450miles / 13 G = 34 MPG based on when your fuel light comes on

Use your phone GPS to check your speedometer. Typically, they design speedometer to read higher than actual speed which results in odometer reading more than actual miles driven.

So GPS speed / speedometer is your calibration offset. eg 71/75 = 0.95
1)fill up tank until nozzle auto shuts off (no more, no less)
2)reset odometer
3)drive
4)fill up tank until nozzle auto shuts off (preferably same nozzle)
5)calculate odometer miles / gallons * 0.95 = actual MPG
6)repeat 2-5 and average
Seems like you know what you're doing so above might already be known.

I consistently see 430+ miles before light goes on and get ~32mpg.
I've run my tank dry at ~500 miles and got about 32mpg mixed driving

Sorry for the late response. The MPG difference was not that big and I think driving habits make more of a difference then the 2.93 diff would, the problem with the 2.93 diff was that acceleration was poor and took longer so you where in a way pressing the gas pedal longer in order to get up to speed, and pressing it further down, so even with lower rpms it didn't have the low end torque to make it a pleasant experience. You also have to take into account the extra weight the e30 diff.

Also I did go from the relatively light stock active wheels to heavier 16" z3 wheels.

With stock tranny and 225/55/16 tires with the 2.93 diff I was going 3k at 70. It was nice to cruse at those lower rpms but trying to pass anyone was harder and just not my cup of tea. But I can imagine with lighter wheels and patience you may be able to squeeze a mpg or two out with it.

What I do find interesting is this article about the e46 330ci mpg experience.
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=926447

From the looks of it the m54b30 swapped in a ti with a 2.93 rear should be able to make 30mpg+ on the freeway and with it being aluminum block it would be better balanced and weigh less then the regular m52/s52 swap and have plenty of low end torque so the 2.93 won't be a problem and on the fun side in a ti the m54b30 should be able to keep up with a stock e36 m3. Future swap??? Possibly

I have a 2.93 diff with an S52 swap and I get about 26-28 mpg on average driving around 70+ mph. I've probably logged more miles than any swapped member over the past 3 years. The odometer just went north of 130k so I'm covering about 28k miles per year. I get the best mileage during the summer months and could easily get 30 mpg driving about 60 mph or so.

I was also close to pulling the trigger on a Fiesta ST but I can't stand to let the TI go just yet.

Good info!

How do you drive? Shift at what rpm normally? Grandma style?

How does it pull with the 2.93? Can you compare it with anything similar cars you driven? (swapped e30, e36 m3, etc).

Hmm supports my idea of m54b30 swap for good mpg/fun combo.

Not aggressive at all I rarely go above 3k but there's plenty of power. It's probably just as quick as a stock e36 maybe a bit faster.

stock e36 ..... ? 328? m3? I am assuming m3 since we are talking about the s52? Sorry just want to make sure .

** Bit of a thread hijack, but how did it feel going from m44 to s52 up front (from your picture i assume you autocross?) did it effect transfer between corners?

Thanks.

Sorry, E36 M3. Yes the swap did effect the cornering but it's all correctable with the proper suspension, if I had to d it over I would have left the car stock for a few years to develop better basic car control skills.

If I were back in SOCAL I wouldn't the swap at all. Smog is too much of a hassle just get a E36 M3.

Hmmmm good food for thought. Sure the swap weight is correctable but I don't find it optimal, still has more weight on front tires for wear, and a good balanced car that can jump between corners fluidly is my goal (of course then ppl say just buy a miata or ae86 or such) but maybe I am over thinking things.

Swap just needs to be done cleanly with all smog stuff present and I don't mind doing that if I eventually swap, once ref'd it shouldn't be a problem, but yes it is just more work.

I did drive a e36 m3 pretty recently and it was definitely faster but nothing earth shattering, I like how the ti can be pushed pretty hard safely with just a bit of suspension (mostly due to lack of power I presume). That being said m44 is good for better mpg's as its my daily and I know its reliable while with a new car I would have to go through it all over again.

In all honesty, I have thought hard about switching to a e36 m3, I can deal with parts being a bit more expensive and paying more for gas but at this point the only main thing holding me back is I know exactly where the ti stand maintenance wise so it fills my needs perfectly as a daily.
