Default Obd2 to obd2 electrics

Hoping this thread doesn't die quickly because I can't find the info anywhere else

I have a 97 Ti and want to swap a 96 328is motor and trans into it, the mounting and driveline I won't have a problem with, exhaust may set me back a little but I have some theory's and am starting another thread called "328ti exhaust help"

But for this thread I wanted to confirm some knowledge I have gathered from this forum and others
To my knowledge, with 2 obd2 cars (97 318ti and 96 328is) I can pull the two motors with the engine harnesses and accessories(basically fully dressed) and swap the mounts and all physical components (ac power steering pump etc) and when the 2.8 is bolted into the Ti body I can just plug the 2.8 engine harness into the Ti chassis harness(this would have to mean that all obd2 e36 cars have the same chassis harness right, is this true) and then swap the 2.8 dme ews and key chip (which by the way I'm still not sure what the key chip is- I thought it was either the chip inside the actual key or the ignition assembly inside the steering column) but I could swap the motor and the corresponding dme, ews, key chip, and gauge cluster and the car would run like a top
This sounds right because the portion of the chassis harness that deals with the motor and ews system is staying the same (assuming the cars have the same chassis harness) and motor, ews system and there electrics would be set up exactly the same as they would in the there original body
the ews system wouldn't need to be re aligned because the only thing changing in the system is the actual wires, the ews wouldn't even know it was in a different car so to speak
If anyone can credit or discredit this information that would be amazing, I believe it to be true but any and all input is more than welcome

Flynn, you are pretty much on target.

The Key Chip is literally a chip inside the key that corresponds with the EWS and the DME. Use all three from the donor car and you should be good to go!

(The antennae ring around the key cylinder is not specific to a car's DME, EWS or key, it is simply what reads the key chip info and sends it back to the EWS for verification. No need to swap it as well).

Awsome!! That's soo great to hear I'm gonna buy the donor car and start as soon as I finished SAT's
So the only downside is that I will have 2 keys for the car
One for the ignition and one for the doors/hatch
But that's not much of a downside compared to the upside lol I'm so fricken excited

Flynn, you are missing one thing in your excitement...

You only need to swap the key chip from your TI key with the chip from the donor 328is. This way you don't need to try and swap tumblers and cylinders, just the chips. Then you can use your original TI key with the 328is chip inside it.
