Default Engine Oil Meter

Hello, just bought a 1995 318ti. The car did not come with an owners manual as the one of the previous owners lost it.
When i turn on my car below the speedometer an engine oil life meter pops up. There are two lights on the right that are lit up, one is red and one is yellow. What is this telling me, that my oil is used and past due, or that it is newer oil.
Thanks

Those lights are a way of helping you to remember when your car is due for an inspection and or oil change. The lights start out all green, and dissapear one by one. When the yellow light comes on, you are due. When the red light comes on, you are past due. If you take it in to the shop for service, they will reset it for you, and you will begin counting down from green again. If you plan on doing oil and inpection yourself, you can buy a reset tool. It is possible that the oil was last changed by someone or someplace that didn't haev a tool, but if the car is new to you and you don't haev service records, you should probably just change it. Also, search the threads for maintenence and inspection I and II.
