Was wondering if anyone with Auto trans has experienced a surging at stop and if this is normal for the ti or is it a problem? It also seems to spend too much time in 2nd gear before downshifting to 1st when slowing down. I've owned a 530 auto which didn't seem to exhibit this issue, but come to think about it; it weighed twice as much. | | | 02-18-2008, 11:12 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 1,895 | I have a 1996 automatic with 85,000 miles and it does not surge. Have you driven it in manual mode? Also, have you tried it in sport mode? __________________ ... ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ | | | 02-19-2008, 06:20 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: sf ca Posts: 32 | I have a 96 auto it revs high and loud from first to second and has surging although light in this area. Is this regular also new to the ti. I saw it and had to have it. Never used manual yet how do I start and stop this mode more info than push the A or M please. I had no chance to ask any questions before I bought. Sport mode I had no idea what is this? Yes I am dumb to this car and thats why I'm glad I found this site. | | | 02-19-2008, 01:54 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: cary, nc Posts: 2,259 | Manual Mode: Switch to M. You can shift through the first three gears manually...IE: selecting M-1 keeps it in first gear all the time. M-2 Keeps it in second gear all the time, etc Sport Mode: Leave it in Auto mode, but down shift to the 3. This the engine/transmission shift automatically up to third gear. Likewise, A-2 will shift automatically up to second gear (but won't go beyond 2nd) Using A-3 boosts the RPMS and helps out the acceleration. __________________ 1995 318ti Active Pioneer Speakers [] Aluminum Billet door locks [] ACS Pedals/Deadrest [] ACS Shift Knob / E-Brake Handle [] Clear Corners/Tails/Sides [] Sylvania Exterior Lighting [] Custom CAI [] Dinan Engine Chip [] Dinan Transmission Chip [] H&R Race Springs [] Tokico Illumina Shocks [] BMW X-Brace [] Relocated Lighter Mod [] Custom iPod Mod http://www.cardomain.com/id/robcarync | | | 02-19-2008, 02:05 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: SW Michigan Posts: 90 | [QUOTE=kcosh;156118]I've just acquired an 98 automatic with about 145,000 on it. I have a 98 auto and it too surges at stop, especially when A/C is engaged. Cannot comment as to normal or not. My car has 24,000 miles original miles, doubt if anything is "broke". Surge notwithstanding, car runs / operates perfectly in all respects. | | | 02-19-2008, 03:00 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Denver, Colorado Posts: 3,212 | Yea i have a 98 with 145k on it, it surges sometimes at the lights. It's nothing that seems big, but it runs good and no problems yet, knock on wood. so i think it might be normal. | | | 02-19-2008, 03:06 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: sf ca Posts: 32 | thank you for the info. auto trans is starting to sound alot more fun. I will play around on my way to work. I did not think the sounds i herd was a big deal but also wanted to ask my fellow ti people | | | 02-19-2008, 03:42 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Auburn, WA Posts: 1,814 | try an oil change __________________ 5/96 318TI Sport BIG TURBO | | | 02-19-2008, 04:47 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 1,895 | Getting back to the engine surge at stops. I think this would be an engine problem more than a transmission problem. Have you replaced the air filter? Also check for air leaks in any of the intake areas. Also, a lot of people on this board have had bad idling cleared up by replacing the PCV valve. __________________ ... ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ | | | 02-21-2008, 01:48 AM | #10 | Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: New Jersey Posts: 65 | I've yet to dive into any vacuum related things but did basics... air filter, plugs, oil filter, oil. Could be be PVC hose as I cracked it when removing it while changing the valve cover gasket; it was hard to get that hose off the valve cover. I Just taped it up until it gets warmer out. When driving in Manual mode should you downshift or does the trans do that for you? | | | 02-21-2008, 01:54 AM | #11 | Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: New Jersey Posts: 65 | rikdee, I'm so jealous 24,000 miles on a 98 that's incredible. | | | 04-11-2008, 07:21 AM | #12 | Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: San Diego CA Posts: 48 | I have 95ti 212,000, when cold tranny slipps after fast stop, then start it slipps I have to let off gas, when warmed up it fine mostly, I was told trans fluid could not be added due to sealed case? any word on that, prob has not gotten any worse in 60,000miles | | | 04-11-2008, 01:53 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 1,895 | Some say don't mess with the "lifetime" trans fluid, some say go for it. http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech...Fluid_Auto.htm __________________ ... ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ | | | 04-11-2008, 09:52 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | Quote: Originally Posted by a2xguru I have 95ti 212,000, when cold tranny slipps after fast stop, then start it slipps I have to let off gas, when warmed up it fine mostly, I was told trans fluid could not be added due to sealed case? any word on that, prob has not gotten any worse in 60,000miles | I changed my auto fluid a couple years ago and if I stopped hard, then immediately accelerated, it would sort of bang into gear. Felt like the tranny was going to blow up. Is that your issue? You definitely can add fluid, but the level needs to checked at a fairly precise fluid temperature. I recommend going out and buying a probe type thermometer. Ideally something on a wire that you can dip into the fluid. Or even invest in one of those cool IR no-touch thermometers. Here's the procedure. www.ge39.com/files/SD92-114.pdf | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
