Default New To forum Hi EveryOne

Hi there

New To the Forum. Yesterday bought a 318ti with 71K.

Looked round the car seems pretty original and but noticed a few things this morning and little concerned.

Dealer mentioned recent oil change. I notice on front of engine some oil, and in the under try below. Under the car, little damp.

Seen previous documentation about a year ago from Dick Lovett mentioned oil leak and steam cleaning.

Worry if this is a serious issue.

seen threads about o rings. Major job? DIY?

Your help will be much appreciated. This car good little project for me but worry if I have made a mistake.

Hi Nick, and welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us.
What I would recommend would be to get so some brake cleaner/ & or another good engine cleaner & degreaser & clean around the dirty area then go by your local auto parts store a pick up a bottle of engine UV dye as well as some UV glasses & flashlight so you can pin point the seepage. I'd put money on it being the oil filter housing gasket(Just a guess). Part #11421709800. 2.95$ from ECS tuning & relatively easy to do as long as you have basic tools as well as some Alan key bits and torque bits.
This car is extremely easy to work on & very rewarding to do so as well! Hope you enjoy owning it, & if you have any problems/ general questions any one here would be happy to help you

Welcome Nick,

I agree with slo318TI, you likely have an oil filter housing leak. Use some brake cleaner to clean off any leaked oil and go drive around for a day. You should then be able to see exactly where the leak is coming from. If it is the oil filter housing you will need more than just the gasket mentioned. There is a 'bushing' as well, which is really just a check valve with an o-ring at each end. Here's the kit I've put together.

It's not a difficult job to replace the oil filter housing and bushing but a lot does need to be removed so consider replacing things like belts, pulleys, doing an oil change at the same time, air filter, intake boot, and don't do all that work without replacing the coolant fitting on the block right behind the oil filter housing.

While your at it, do the coolant fitting on the back of the head as well. This little fitting is likely responsibly for most M44 overheats.

Cheers Guys.

Had a look and where oil filter casing and below no sign of oil.

Mainly on under tray but also solenoids there are 2? bit oily.

Drove last night on collection and did around 80 mile trip and checked oil all ok. was not sure of max mark.

Cold here in London. Drove 8 miles and then checked oil again just to check exact level. Noticed a slight cream on dip stick.

Coolant level ok and no cream or gunk under filler cap. Checked on forums and dealer and normal after short journeys. you guys agree?

Praying u guys say yes!

Default panicking

Hi

Jacked up car and notice when holding from right tyre and wiggle (hold ing wheel at 15 mins past and left at 45 mins past on a clock) moving right hand away from me whilst left towards me and vice versa, notice some play and slight noise.

Holding top of wheel and bottom of wheel. no movement

Starting to panic as worry this is not safe for my wife and kids to be in.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated

I am hardly a mechanic so I won't take a uneducated guess regarding the oil leak.

But I can say that if you have a m44 (1.9L 4 cylinder) you do not have Vanos. I had a pretty bad oil leak and it was the oil housing, as some members mentioned above me. Bimmerbum's post has all you need regarding that. Regarding the wheel wiggle, that could be weal bearing, but it seems slight, so it will need attention eventually. But your going to have to do more then that for it to break down on you, you won't have to worry about it falling off or anything that is specifically dangerous at this point.

Dont I have the BMW 318ti E46 Compact Europe N42 engine?

Mine is a 2002 model.

Looking on the internet the 2 round things that plug in with two connections and a silver bracket. Prone to leak.

Confused now

Oh boy!

You just threw us for a complete loop!

On this side of the pond we never got the e46 compacts. So when you said you had gotten a 318ti those of us from North America assume a 1995->1999 318ti, since that is all we have. Now I know why that picture looked strange.

Now we need to restart the entire conversation.

I have absolutely nothing off the top of my head to help at the moment, sorry!
