OOP's Engine noise.

The other day I was helping a friend out, by giving him a jump start. So I popped my hood while my car was running at idle. Hooked up his bat & mine. And noticed that my engine starting nocking and clacking. I was trippin on it, because it was getting worse. So I instantly shut it down. Checked my oil level, and sure enough, it was F-N real low. So I drove my car,"like an idiot" for about 5min, to get some oil. So, a total of about 8min of running, on a 170k mile engine, w/full synth. Do you guys out their think I wasted my eng??? Should I find a good/used long block, or rebuild. Noise is gone after I topped my oil off............. Thanx for any sugg..........

I don't think the full synth is going to help you here. Was your oil light on? I am guessing the clacking maybe the timing chain (tensioner). Should have had your friend get your oil! Noise being gone is good.. If it runs fine, forget about it. For the oil to be that low in the first place you were probably burning a fair amount anyway.
