Default Another owner with dome light issues…

Folks, Not sure if this has been covered, and I couldn’t narrow it down on the search function so if you could help me out, I’d really appreciate it.

Equipment or item giving trouble: Both dome lights, foot well lights.

All lights I listed above work ok when turned on manually, that is, switched to far right position on front dome light/map light location.

Problem is in the middle position, that is, when they are supposed to go off when door is closed. When door is closed, all lights stay on. When car is being driven, the lights stay on. In order to drive at night, I need to position interior lights in left, or off position.

But….When lights are in left, or off position, the floor foot well lamps are still on. I didn’t notice this during the day, but on my first evening drive, I noticed they stay on.

And…When I lock the car with key, the floor lamps also remain on. I think they eventually go out (no, they don’t fade away like they are supposed to…) because my battery should’ve been dead if they stayed on all night.

What could possibly be causing this problem? PO said he noticed the problem started when the headliner was replaced, but somehow I can’t see that being the problem. Maybe some sort of signal stating the doors are closed is not working???

Thanks in advance.

I suspect a problem with the light switch in the hatch.

Awesome! Thanks 1996...You were right. Opened hatch, played around with switch, and the lights blinked along in sequence with switch movement. Going to take switch out and run it by the local BMW dealer. I couldn’t narrow it down on real oem. Thanks again 1996.
Regards,
-SB
