Unhappy Microfilter replacement

Hello everyone,

I own a 1992 E36 318i and have read countless tutorials on how to replace a Microfilter with no luck. My car is not equipped with A/C and the glovebox compartment looks nothing like described by most tutorials (there is no knob to turn, the pictures almost look like they're for a different car). Which is why I am starting to think that my filter is also located under the hood.

I have taken my air plenum out and noticed that the grill that is supposed to go on it was missing, I also noticed that some white plastic tabs behind the plenum were broken and that some screws were replaced with self-drilling bolts (brand new shiny ones). Unfortunately I did not find any filters under all of that, but that could also explain why I've been seeing dirt or dry leaves blowing out of the vents.

I can only conclude that the previous owner simply removed the Microfilter and never bothered to replace it.

Do you think it's possible that I could also have a similar cabin filter as the 318ti? Or maybe I am not supposed to have a filter at all?

The ti version is unique... nothing like the e36 coupe and sedan.
This link shows you how to replace the filters on a ti. They are accessed from under the hood.

I think there has always been a question about this for non-AC models (seems to be much more common in Europe). Any european members without AC that have replaced their microfilters that could comment?
