The solution is E46 3XX brakes.

Since you have 17" wheels, the E46 330 front brakes would be a good upgrade. You'd go from a 286mm x 12mm solid rotor, to a 325mm x 25mm vented rotor. The E46 328 or E46 325 will bump you up to 300mm x 22mm vented. The E46 323 has 286mm x 22mm vented rotors like the "normal" E36s, so it's the most meager upgrade.

Dig around on www.car-part.com, and I'm sure you'll find a good set of calipers and caliper carriers. You'll probably want new pads and rotors though.

discs , calipers and carriers (that hold the calliper to the damper leg)

then you need a e36 M3 slave cylinder to accommodate for the extra fluid travel to the new larger calipers.

the set up is no harder than this

If you get the E46 325/328 brakes, you won't need a new brake master cylinder. The those calipers use the same size pistons you already have.

The true mini-BBK is the e36 m3 setup. Larger piston, vented, about 3-5mm wider, and about 1.25" larger diameter than the original ti rotors pre 04/98. The 330 setup has a larger rotor, uses the same size piston, and is vented, an upgrade, but not as much as the E36 M3. The E46 M3 front brake carriers must be modified by milling 6-7mm of material off the face of the carrier which mounts to the kingpin. This corrects the offset of the caliper in relation to the 325mm rotors.

Most people look for a way around spending time to do the work rather than spending money for something easy. M3>330, E46M3, just forget it. All you need are the spindles, rotors, calipers, pads, and carriers. 16's will fit the 330 and m3 brakes, has been proven.
