Question M44 Loose wire

Good morning! Putting my motor back in this morning and trying to identify this loose wire.

I suspect it got pulled out of a connector then I pulled the motor out. It attaches to the rear side of the drivers side strut tower. It's brown and about 14-16" long. The application is a 1997 ti M44 manual.

If someone with a post 10/96 318ti with a stock setup can check under the hood and perhaps take a pic, i'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Hmm, I have a 96 and nothing like that, and certainly nothing that attaches to the back side of the strut tower. Does it look like a factory-type wire? I'm wondering if it was an aftermarket ground for something.

Ya, looks factory. the motor I'm swapping in is a M44 from a 96 and I had to swap the exhaust, fuel rail, intake manifold and upper timing chain cover to cover differences in the pre 10/96 M44 and post 10/96. As such, I know there are wiring differences as the wiring harnesses are slightly different.

Thanks for looking and commenting. I just didn't want to take the intake apart again in case the connection was on the underside of the motor before I drop the motor back in.

On my ti (build date 2/97), there is a connector underneath the air pump where this ground wire attaches. The brown wire is the one coming up from the bottom of this picture and attaching into the connector. Hope this helps.

Hey Jerry! Thanks that was it. Red yellow lead attached to the wiring harness and the brown lead connect to a connector to the air pump. I kinda ripped it out. Fixed and all better now.

Thanks for checking and the pic! I hope all is well with you. Cheers, Rich

Makes sense. I have a 3/96 with no air pump, so no wire! Glad you figured it out.
