Default Would you sell or keep this 318ti?

I have a 1996 318ti with 122k miles and all the good stuff (sports package, premium sound, rims, sunroof, etc..) and the headgasket is blown. The dealership claims $3200 to fix (and replace waterpump, spark plugs, etc..)... a local mechanic claims he can do it for far less... closer to $1500. The only other work I'm aware it needs is one tire has little tread, the AC needs a recharge, and the passenger side mirror needs a new casing. Some scratches and a small dent on passenger door, but otherwise exterior and interior are in great shape (even has Alpine CD/mp3 player w/ sub).

Kelly's blue book estimates it is worth $3800-$5000, and I'm seeing it (in slightly better condition) selling for as much as $8k on Autotrader.com.

My best offer is $2500 for it, and my main concern is if I pay $1500 to replace the headgasket, the tranny may go... although it hasn't ever slipped... I have been driving it rough.

Any idea how many miles I can expect to get out of the tranny? I'd hate to fix it, and pay $3000 - $4000 to replace the tranny later this year.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO??

Cheers,
NORTH

I'll buy it for 2500. where you located. I have another source for an m3 motor 3k complete ready for swap. in regards to toyotas as reliability, i doubt it. I have had my 318ti since oct 95. I has never given me any problems. The only time it saw the shop was when it had an M3 transplant a couple months ago. Just couldnt stand the lack of power any longer.

Default I'm in Portland!

Strange you mention it... I live in West Linn, Oregon...

The best offer has moved up to $2900, however.

Let me know if you're still interested, and we make arrangements for you to stop by.
