Would you sell or keep this 318ti? I have a 1996 318ti with 122k miles and all the good stuff (sports package, premium sound, rims, sunroof, etc..) and the headgasket is blown. The dealership claims $3200 to fix (and replace waterpump, spark plugs, etc..)... a local mechanic claims he can do it for far less... closer to $1500. The only other work I'm aware it needs is one tire has little tread, the AC needs a recharge, and the passenger side mirror needs a new casing. Some scratches and a small dent on passenger door, but otherwise exterior and interior are in great shape (even has Alpine CD/mp3 player w/ sub). Kelly's blue book estimates it is worth $3800-$5000, and I'm seeing it (in slightly better condition) selling for as much as $8k on Autotrader.com. My best offer is $2500 for it, and my main concern is if I pay $1500 to replace the headgasket, the tranny may go... although it hasn't ever slipped... I have been driving it rough. Any idea how many miles I can expect to get out of the tranny? I'd hate to fix it, and pay $3000 - $4000 to replace the tranny later this year. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? Cheers, NORTH |
