Default 318ti Automatic RPM issue

Hi, My name is srini and I am from Roseville, CA . I am new to this forum. I just purchased a 99 318ti Automatic sport from the private party. The car was garaged for 4 months. Before I buy I did a test drive it was very good. I drove on the freeway with 85 speed it was fine. After the car purchase I was driving back to Roseville and after I drove 60 miles suddenly the RPM was coming down and I pulled over the exit, turned off the car and turned it back on. The check engine light was on. The car won’t go above 50 speed. And the accelerator pedal is not smooth like it was before.
If any anyone have come across with the similar problem. Please share.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Srini

Good to see you Srini!

After checking it out and consulting Dr. Wolfe for a second opinion, we concluded it is likely a clogged fuel filter. It idles great, just has no power under load. My BT reader said fuel efficiency was at 58%.

Srini called the PO and he noted as long as he's owned the car, the filter hasn't been changed. He was a the second owner in a one family car.

I explained how to change it and what he needed. We also discussed cooling system and recommended maintenance before he buys shiny wheels.

Srini will head to Harbor Freight to start picking a few base tools to service his two TI's.

Srini, You are looking for a metric set, not SAE. You can get a combo, but knowing your three cars, a good metric set will work for all three.

Call JC today at EPS. so he can have your filter ready for pick up tomorrow. He may have to order it. May as well get an oil filter as well. Mahle is the brand I typically pick up for both.

For stuff you can mail order, there are a few sources. Look for Ed here on this forum. (Bimmerbum) Good parts source and knowledgeable dude if you have a question.

Srini, search for Disa valve issue. Also a couple of members are having similar issues. Check their posts as well. I'll ring you when I get back to town.

Camshaft Position Sensor, Lower intake manifold gasket, upper manifold gasket (x2), check the hoses in the area. I'd suggest while we are in there we replace the plastic coolant pipe and o-ring. Check underneath to see if you have any oil leak. If so, since we are there, we can swap out the oil housing gasket and o-ring. Check the diagram in RealOEM.

Check the DIY's for the Oil Housing gasket, Plastic water pipe and CPS replacement.

While it looked like mice chewed on your cables and hoses, I didn't see much more than cosmetic damage.

I pointed out the hoses today that typically has deterioration issues (Cracking/Swelling) This week, those are the one you are going to need to inspect closer.

I didn't see that you needed a new head gasket. Do you mean Valve Cover Gasket? Yours looked fine.

Hi All,

The problem still exists. the car wont go above 3000 RPM. Looks like it is in limp mode.

Rich helped me to do the below things.

1) changed knock sensors
2) Coolant system changed most of the hoses
3) changed hose for the fuel injectors
4) Changed crankshaft position sensor
5) also changed the fuel pump.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Srini
