How did you manage to make a BMW diesel conversion, where did you get the engine from? I am an ex-european citizen and believe me, everyone in Europe is crazy about turbo-diesel engines. I believe that whoever of you guys have been in Europe and got a ride in a modern diesel car, would change (atleast for yourself) the "mass" american understanding of the dirty, smoky, noisy, shaking, traktor diesel engine I would like to see this BMW turbo diesel monster engine. Can you post pictures so we can enjoy the art of work __________________ '96 BMW 318ti Hellrod 5SPD - SOLD '04 BMW X3 2.5L Alpine White PRM PKG Automatic/Steptronic PRM PKG - SOLD '01 BMW M3 6SPD Imola Red Luxury PKG '11 BMW X5 xdrive35d - 3.0L Twin-Turbo Diesel - The Ultimate Oil Burner | | | 10-16-2007, 05:18 PM | #18 | Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Cleveland, Ohio Posts: 32 | Quote: Originally Posted by tol4o All I can say is that this car as amazing! Engine is from England and slipped right in neat as you please. I purchased engine, tranny and diff plus the diesel instrument cluster. Custom exhaust was fabricated here in the States. The best part is the monster torque between 2,000-3,000 rpm. | | | 10-16-2007, 05:25 PM | #19 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | That is a dream car, power and fuel economy. How does someone go about importing an engine like that? Quote: Originally Posted by BurningRiver Thanks. Really the hardest part was the wiring (not done by me!). It helps to be a bit crazed too. | | | 10-16-2007, 07:54 PM | #21 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Orange County, NY Posts: 1,067 | Tell me more about this engine. What year is it and what is the code or name for it? I'm worried about reliability and maintanace costs but your car still sounds awesome! What is the max RPM on the car? Can you do peel outs and donuts easy with this setup? | | | 10-16-2007, 08:06 PM | #22 | Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Cleveland, Ohio Posts: 32 | Quote: Originally Posted by Ji Money Tell me more about this engine. Can you do peel outs and donuts easy with this setup? | I appreciate the questions. They were the same questions I had going into the project originally. The engine code is M51. It came in two flavors: a turbo only 2.5L six cylinder diesel in the 325td and turbocharged and intercooled in the 325tds like the car being sold. Max rpm is 5300 rpm. No M3 there! Max torque is reached at 1900 rpm and is flat as Kansas up to 3200 rpm and gradually tapers off from there. 2K-3K is the sweet spot with the ECU chip. As far as donuts and burnouts, can't personally vouch for that since I really don't drive it like that. It hooks up quite well, so it doesn't waste energy burning rubber, it just flat goes. Let's just say it's got solid, linear acceleration that will humble any stock 318ti 24/7. Reliability has been very good. All the stuff I've done is normal maintenance (e.g. pads and rotors). There shouldn't be any pricey items coming due. | | | 10-17-2007, 03:43 AM | #23 | Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Cleveland, Ohio Posts: 32 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 Dude you're my hero! but why didn't you post up when it was undergoing all this work? BTW, to post pics just download them to photobucket or imageshack, come back here and instead of posting a quick reply, click "Go Advaced" when the screen comes up, just above the text box, click on this button Then cut and paste the direct link URL from photobucket or whatever hosting site you used into the box and click OK. Otherwise you could just email them to me and I'll post them for you. You gotta show us the pics, if nothing else, it'll help you sell your car. | Thanks, man. I did have a passing fancy to document the process, but it went in fits and starts over several months so it got tough to do. The shop who did the work took some pics, but I keep forgetting to grab them. | | | 10-17-2007, 11:27 PM | #24 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Orange County, NY Posts: 1,067 | Quote: Originally Posted by BurningRiver I appreciate the questions. I live in upstate NY, not too far from Ohio. | | | 10-18-2007, 03:31 AM | #25 | Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Cleveland, Ohio Posts: 32 | Quote: Originally Posted by Ji Money Alright cool.
