It appears that the fog light and headlight switches are always illuminated when my car is running (98 318ti here). But the headlight switch bulb was burned out, so I attempted to remove it, broke it off, and had to remove the grey plastic socket as well. Part on order from local bimmer dealer. With socket removed, fog lamp switch is not illuminated, and the instrument cluster appears to be missing light in the lower center. Anyone know if these lights I just mentioned are all on the same circuit? Thanks for your help. | | | 05-02-2006, 06:56 PM | #2 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | The bulb abd the gray "socket" are one piece; they come as an assembly. It cannot be removed from the front, the cluster surround must be removed, along with the cluster and steering wheel to get to the connector on the back side. Lights on the cluster are seperate bulbs that are in the cluster. While the cluster is out for the other bulbs, check them all and replace any that are suspect. | | | 05-03-2006, 04:15 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: San Francisco, CA Posts: 14 | How to remove steering wheel? Thanks for the reply Jim. I used to remove easily the steering wheel on my '84 e30, but my 318ti has an airbag. Can you describe how to remove the steering wheel on this car? Thanks again! | | | 05-03-2006, 05:58 PM | #4 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | - disconnect battery ground lead
- remove trim under wheel & dash
- unplug air bag and horn connections
- remove air bag from wheel
- remove large bolt retaining wheel
- remove wheel
- remove 2 torx screws from top of cluster
- press bottom of cluster and pull out
- remove three connectors from cluster
- unscrew headlight and foglight knobs
- pry off covers around headlight & foglight knobs
- remove torx screws under covers
- pull out cluster surround
- find light connections and un-plug
- reverse order, change BOTH bulbs
- When complete, you may have to have the airbag light re-set. Normally, I don't get the light, but this last time I did...
