Default Proper Tire Pressure??

The manufacturer's label inside the driver's door on my '98 recommends 26psi for my tires, but every tire shop wants to inflate them to 32psi. Any input on the correct inflation?

The label recommends 26psi because it adds to the comfort level...
Mine are at 36psi.
At the place where I had my car aligned, the guy suggested that mid 30s are good.
My friend has his at around 40psi.
Remember...something like mid-30s to 40psi will give you better gas mileage than 26psi.
(I trust the guy who aligned my car because he knows that he's talking about and he does race cars...lol)

Just be sure not to overinflate because it will wear the center of your tires out fast.

I usually keep mine at under 35 psi.

I keep mine at the factory recommended. The front tires should be lower pressure than the rear tires. This helps reduce oversteer, which this car has a tendancy to do. You are fine to run them higher though, 32 PSI won't hurt anything. I notice most shops put 32 PSI in any vehicle as it is a fairly safe number. It is low enough not to blow the valve stem out or cause uneven wear and high enough so you tire doesn't de-tread from overheating.

If you carry near or over the load limit (around 400 lbs including passengers) you should run higher PSI (maybe 30-32). Over inflated tires are hard, don't have as good of traction, increase braking distances, and are generally uncomfortable. Over inflating sometimes works better for autocross due to less sidewall rollover, however this only helps if sidewall rollover is a problem with your particular tires. So I would suggest not running 35+ PSI for street driving unless you don't mind an abusive ride, loss of traction, for improvements in steering response and cornering stability. As long as your tires aren't under inflated the gas mileage will be fine. However, wider lower profile tires that are Z rated can handle a much higher pressure without being overinflated than a high profile non-speed rated tire.

Unless you are racing on a track (smooth without road irregularities) I would run factory to no more than 32 psi. If you cruise at high speeds (greater than 100) you should also run higher pressures.

Thanks for all the advice. I've tried it at 32psi and 26psi and I think it really needs to be somewhere in between. I like the ride and feel at 26, but the Texas roads get really hot and that might be a little low. The trade off in gas mileage savings is minimal in comparison to better handling though.
I'll experiment a bit and let you know what happens.
Thanks- Clutch

i ride my fronts at 29psi and rears at 32psi... I work at discount tire, and honestly between 29 and 32 for front, and 32 to 35 in rear will be ok. I wouldnt inflate them much more then that just because of uneven wear. You dont want to eat through your tires faster then it already does. 35 psi and above is really for real low pro tires that need the psi to support the weight of the vehicle... And in terms of gas mileage, lower then 27 or 28 you will notice a difference, but if u keep above that and below 36, you'll be just peachy... So to sum up lol.......... 29 in front and 32 rear is what i recommend.
