It looks like all you need is a low current LED between ground and DME pin 16 for an M42 318ti

or between ground and DME pin 58 for an M44

As a shift-up warning, 4800 rpm might be a little late in first gear.

I found some LEDs that could produce, say, three 2.5mm (0.1 inch) vertical dots through a blank panel near the cigarette lighter. The possible colors are: deep red, red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Orange would be the most discrete but perhaps too much so. I think blue and green would have to be dimmed at night.

I usually shift between 3800-4500. At times I push it to 6000 but not too often

Your not likely to hurt the motor shifting up....
Under power engines are very tough, the rev limiter will protect the motor.
its on the downshift when car momentum helps create
the "Money Shift" that things go bad..

Very true. A shift-up warning mostly protects my pride while spooling up the engine: from neglecting the absolute rpm in the heat of the moment and bouncing off the rev limiter.

Well i've been less afraid to rev the engine up the last couple of days. And tonight it paid off, on my way home tonight, a black Del-Sol pulls up next to me at a light and the passenger starts asking me, "Does that have a turbo in it?" I say no, then he asks "does it have a supercharger in it", I say no again but add it has a vaccuum leak, the driver then says "its got a wine"....
The light goes green, and he winds his up and goes. So I went...was a full car length ahead by the time I hit second.

Take your Del-Sol back to BC guys...it sucks....
They tried again at the next red light...same results...lol.

So, now i'm running each gear closer to 3500rpm and the car loves it, my ears however do not....new exhaust is going to get bought...hopefully sooner than later...lol.

Just be sure the engine is fully warmed up before you enjoy the motor, which may be a few minutes after the temperature needle is vertical, and be careful when it is wet. (I assume you are expert on snow. )

The engine has more than enough torque around its torque maximum (4500 for the M42, 4300 for the M44) to break lose the rear tires on wet pavement – even in third. Too many drivers, here, forget this and end up rotating the car into things. We don't want that to happen to your car, even if it presently has a vacuum leak.

to Wulvndawg----if you do start to look at new muffler systems, I had a very good experience with Canadian based solo-performance mufflers-- www.solo-performance.com they offer a variety of high flow performance mufflers/resonators with a wide range of noise levels, including one that is reportedly oem quiet. Jeff provided great customer service.

Thx guys. Yeah i'm not busting anything loose until I get a new clutch...its on its way out and just slips if I do drop the clutch or anything like that, so for right now its a slight rolling start race.

And thanks for the tips on the exhaust...Iam thinking of going for as quiet as possible but also have good performance...yes the raspy throaty gargly sounding exhausts have there appeal too. But the extra noise really isnt necessary in todays world.

Thx guys.

For more punch there are several lightweight fly-wheel and clutch packages.. BTW yhou almost always have to replace the flywheel very few machine shops have the special machine to turn the dual mass flywheel...

Cheers.

BBBBOOOOOO DAVE! you just saved me some down time and added to my expenses.....Thanks for the tip though much appreciated.

Dont think I will go the lighter flywheel approach, maybe just a heavier pressure plate.

The original cost more than the older E30 single mass, and is way heavier.. There are several places that sell reasonably priced kits. I'm a centerforce fan but I'm bad sometimes on clutches..

Cheers

Default Noisy exhaust

Had the same kinda probs with a powerflow back box, loud however you drove it, nail it and you almost get deafened! Got a local co. called Prospeed to replace it, not cheap but what a difference, short shift a little and its almost as quiet as anything else on the road, nail it and everybody looks cause it makes such a deep, almost evil, racecar like howl, awsome!
With the clutch does anyone know if i can replace the DMF with the solid flywheel, bolts, pressure plate, clutch etc. out of my old 1996 316i (M43) that i scrapped a while back? Can't see why it won't work myself, but you never know!

Does your current exhaust have a resonator? My guess is no. And if no, installing a resonator from someone's old stock system could tone down the noise quite a bit and save you a lot of money.

Good Luck.
