Hey...are you in the Army Field Band? I'm a trumpet player / band director. I have two old buddies in the Army Blues! ScanGuage...COOLLL!!!
The install time on the factory alarm was very easy. All the connectors are already in place. You just have to take off some of the interior trim panels beneath the glove box and plug in the control module. You need to cut a hole in one of those panels for the glass break sensor as well. There's one small hole that needs to be drilled in the center console. The siren plugs right in to the harness under the hood.
The ScanGauge install was even easier. I plugged it into the OBDII port under the driver's side dash, routed the cable to the ash tray area and away I went. That's after having it lying in the door pocket for about a year because I'm lazy. I'll get a picture of it up later.

I am in the Army Field Band. I plan the tours for the concert band and chorus. I've met a few guys in the Blues, but I don't know any of them well. I did serve with their director in Germany back in the day. Since you play trumpet you should definitely check out the Jazz Ambassadors. Our trumpet section is scary.

To be honest, I'd much rather have ther Sport without the computer and get a ScanGuage than have the active model. To me, the Sport model has all the cool stuff. I love those seats, by the way! Also, thanks Hotmilk for the aftermarket keyless entry suggestion! I found a few other options as well, but your suggestion is definitely the least expensive. That ddition will have to wait a month or two, so I have time to ponder my options. Don;t worry...I'd NEVER go to Best Buy!!!

really? I thought all M44s have OBDII as it was a legal requirement, hence the move from M42 to M44 halfway through the e36 compact's life cycle?

He may be referring to the port inside the car. I don't believe UK spec cars have them.

EOBD didn't become a requirement in Europe until 2001, and even then, a manufacturer could get a waiver which quite a few did. (A couple years ago, the list of waivers was six pages long according to the DEKRA engineer I talked to.)

It's possible a European-market DME supports the OBD port and reporting functions even though the car is missing the connector and some of the emissions-related parts for it to report on, such as the post-catalyst O2 sensor. I wouldn't get my hopes up, but I would love to be proven wrong! I'd test the idea if I could.

Oooooooh. I just noticed you have a year 2000 E36 car. Did you get lucky and receive one with the 1.9L engine BMW was preparing for the E46? It might very well have EOBD because of that. That would be cool. www.realoem.com, however, shows the 318ti still getting the older M44.

It's definitely an M44 in my car although it may have some of these things you mention. It's actually at the garage getting the suspension bushings and a couple of bits in the steering fixed, I will try my hardest to remember to ask Mark, my mechanic - who is a BMW guru - when I pick her up tomorrow.

AFAIK though the only engine to be shared with the e46 was the 6-pot in the continental Europe-only 323ti - that was found in the e46 323 which was dropped early on in favour of the 320i (same HP, more VANOS). There was a very limited run of South African built 318is-badged e36 Sedans in the last production year but they got M44s as well.

Actually my loaner from the garage at the moment is an e36 323i Touring that has the same engine as the 323ti; and obviously the wheels, shocks and gearing are all different, but despite the fact that it is a full-on wagon, it comports itself through the bends very well indeed. It's a real shame there aren't more 323tis around.

I found something similar to the ScanGauge on eBay, asked the vendor if it was M44 compatible, he said 'no'

shame, but it some ways good as ignorance is bliss when it comes to precise fuel econsumption stats lol

If you find space to mount the full size obc, there is a guy planning to reprogram it to display other sensors among other things. Full on factory look, just be loosing the radio I guess..
