From the damage I saw and paperwork that was in the car, I think that the Z hit a curb most prominently at the front passenger wheel. The control arm is bent good, as is the tie rod on that side (unfortunately no joy rides!). Everything else looks OK, but who knows. It seems as if the Z was purchased from a dealership a month or two prior to this accident that occurred at 2:30 am. That was why the engine compartment looks so clean. It's too bad this Z ended up in my hands. I want to go for it. Still a little apprehensive. I jacked it up and was ready to drain fluids and take off the exhaust...Then put it back on the ground. I think that I have a decent understanding of the mechanical aspects of this job. I got concerned with the electrical. I'll have to go to emission testing straight away to get tabs. I understand the EWS, SAP delete on the DME. Not really understanding how to get rid of the ASC and have the ABS intact. I didn't think that the Z engine wiring harness would fit in the TI. So I went ahead and bought a '96 328i 5 speed harness and DME off of Ebay. The Z is a '98, I was thinking that I could take the '96 328i harness and simply plug it in to the '98 Z DME. The TI is a '96 and I figured getting the '96 harness would make things easier, as I don't think the SAP and ASC garbage would be included in it, the TI has neither. I'm now concerned that this wont work. I've been reading up on things and something about Pin locations being different in the years of the DME. Not sure. If that is the case and the DME and harness' have to stay together. Then I see the options as: Running the '98 DME and harness with all the extra crap on it. Or running the '96 stuff, but having the DME and cluster not match. This is what is on my mind these days. Any info or linc's of similar swaps people know would be of great interest to me. I'm still looking too.... ….I'm actually starting to think about putting the Z back on the road. Right front tire. Rear isn't as scuffed. Though they should thank me because I meant to dismember, but this one got tags yesterday. The path to salvage title was easier than I thought. So incidently, and accidently, a Z has joined the fleet. ….and dang, jumpy little thing. Feels pretty dog-on fast. Don’t know if it’s the thrilling danger of the size of it, or the BMW 6, but I can see how it was smashed within a month of the previous owner purchasing it. Can get out of hand pretty quick, and fun, with traction control off. I understand now what all the hulabaloo is about with swaps into the TI. The 3.2 must just be silly, you crazy bastards. Anyhow, I’m looking for a M44 to stick into the Silver TI…..Again….Whilst I was planning and thinking through the swap I felt stress and feel the 4 would be more my capability for now. Roadrash if you see this minus well stick me back into “general discussion” as this great swap idea went bumpkiss. Power is addictive, and you can part out the carcass to recoup your funds. If possible, try to drive a swapped 318ti completed by club member local to you (quite a few people have driven my rat-rod). Truth be told, my M52-powered 318ti is on par with my M Roadster in terms of power and civility. That said, two years after I completed the M44 to M52 swap, I'm now swapping an S52 into my 318ti... with plans to hot-rod it even more. __________________ Sleeper Calypsorot 1996 318ti tintop. I’ve picked up a totaled club sport. M42 with a M44 head on it. I’m swapping interiors right now with thoughts of putting the entire club sport drivetrain in. I’m trying to get out of this Z. Just posted for the first time…not a good time of year to sell a convertible around here. Haven’t heard anything. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5872418929.html I assume that I’m too high. I paid $2400 for it, so there's room. I wonder though at what minimum sale price is it better to go back to the original plan of using these parts? Adding everything up, steering rack, medium lsd, alum block engine/tranny, matching speedo/ecu, etc. Not sure how low I should go trying to sell. I’ve gotta go one way or the other soon. I can’t figure out if these are good problems to have or bad. Since my February post above, I have completed my S52 swap (replacing the M52), while also swapping in a Z3 steering rack and M3 front hubs/brakes. My car is transformed (again!). You can sell off the Z3 carcass after you get the 328ti going... __________________ Sleeper Calypsorot 1996 318ti tintop. Strawman you are an individual of reason and I appreciate you for that. FYI, this is what happens when one debates too long in the Pacific Northwest….a hard top remind you. It’s going to make a comeback. So I’m working the motivation to replace the carpet. I read online to put Borax powder on mold…..do NOT put borax powder in your car! A vacuum worked perfectly fine…now this mess. I figure I’m going to re-do the interior/exterior, then the drivetrain swap. As for the swap vs z3, as someone who drove a 2.8l z3 hardtop and eventually went with the m52 swap for my ti, I will say the m52/s52 fits the ti very nicely. It is a lot more practical, longer wheel base and is just as fun. Good to see some updates! Sometimes projects have the sucky parts but eventually it will be worth it! The thought of putting down Dynamat under the carpet has crossed my mind. I was surprised to see how expensive the stuff is though, never have used it. How does that stuff work out? Is it worth the $100 while I have the carpet out? | | | 03-01-2017, 05:06 AM | #29 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2013 Location: Seattle Posts: 513 | So, the Dynamat was a NO. I went to my local Car Toys to pick some up and grabbed the $140 box that was something like 20sqft., fuggin box was heavy! That gave me pause. I asked the installer over there if it comes up easy after installed. (Ie. Can rock it for a while then get rid of it easily) dude said “no way, it’ll leave a glue mess behind trying to get it off”. I asked if I could install without removing the glue back, just have the carpet hold it in place and he told me “that’s not how it works, needs to adhere to the metal”. Thanked him and left without. Heavier than I thought it would be. Maybe great upgrade in luxo-barge, not this TI. Cleaned the seats and am currently trying to diagnose fuggin rain leaks. I had one in the hatch I knew about and got a new hatch seal put in which seemed to fix it. However, when I was celebrating that I noticed about quarter-inch of water sitting in the passenger floor that hadn’t showed itself till that day. It had showed evidence of leaks (mold) on the sheet metal that I had previously ignored and just cleaned up. I don’t want to install the fresh interior without sorting the leaks. I don’t think that I’ve mentioned I only have a one car garage, so planning is a must. Was hoping to have the interior out of the garage before pulling in the Zed for break. this may take some additional time/planning. My goal is to finish before Earl! So I’ll do my best to keep it moving, but getting ahead in ordering parts, planning, leaks, etc. is a challenge. Live and learn…..and then race! I’m impressed at how easy some people make all this seem. It’s moving along. I think I fixed all the leaks, or at least the big one that I had found. Got through the Clubber, so one less of those on the road. I’m glad to have it gone, starting to finally feel like progress. Now on to the Z! I’m hoping it goes faster since I’m only dealing with drivetrain. Also looking to find somebody that wants a Z project to take it and the drivetrain from the Club.
