Default Nooby question: Where's the fan?

Hi,

I'm the new owner of a US spec, '95 M42, auto/ a/c. There is no fan attached to the water pump, justy a big electric fan attached to the engine side of the radiator. Is this the way they come from the factory? OEM parts only shows the engine driven fan, nothing for an electric only. Is there any reason to convert to an engine driven fan? It only runs when the temp gets to a certain point, it doesn't come on with the a/c, just cycles with the engine temp. Is this normal?

Thanks!

( I love this car! )

THD.

Yes. For the M42 and M44 the electric fan is what comes from the factory. As an engine driven fan increases parasitic power loss it is the best solution for our already low powered cars. Most people that are trying to get more power out of the I6 engines remove the engine driven fan.

It should come on when you hit the AC button, YOu should check the Relay as you may not be getting 2 speeds.

Thanks for the replies... it doesn't come on with the A/C and a quick check with a meter showed the big resistor on the fan to be shagged. Of course, the resistor is not available by itself and the fan costs $326! from the dealer. I'm going to splice in a resistor off of an e34 fan and hope for the best. No way am I going to replace the whole fan for a $20.00 resistor.

THD.
