Hey guys! More exctitng motor issues.....was wondering if anyone can give me any suggestions before I hit the shop! Im on the freeway in 4th, all of the sudden I lose accelleration completely going about 70mph. im pushing gas pedal and not going anywhere! I downshift into 3rd and still no acceleration while pressing the pedal to the metal. Then the next thing I know.... motor dies. I was able to have enough speed to pull over and rest it on the shoulder. I tried to start the car on the shoulder and it started, but no gas while im pumping the pedal. when I start it, it turns over, putters and then dies. After multiple attemps I decided to just let it be instead of flooding the motor with fuel. I checked all of my vaccum....everyhting looks good. Im thinking fuel pump or fuel filter maybe? too dark to try and do more trial and error. Any input is greatly appreciated....thanks! -Chad __________________ 1998'SportR.I.P. 1995 Sport AlpineIII | | | 08-19-2010, 06:53 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Reading, PA Posts: 140 | sounds like what happened when my fuel pump went, but im no expert on the matter | | | 08-19-2010, 12:21 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | Try unplugging the AFM and starting it. Also, check your fuses. | | | 08-19-2010, 04:51 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2009 Location: Long Beach, SoCal Posts: 373 | Quote: Originally Posted by dave45056 Try unplugging the AFM and starting it. And I recently replaced all the air lines and tested the AFM. It could be relay related, just seems odd and all of the fingers are pointing to the fuel pump in which the manner it cut out on me. Its starts up fine and then automatically dies like its ran out of gas, I have a quarter in there. I was just curious to see if this same thing has happened to anyone else. Thanks for the suggestions! __________________ 1998'SportR.I.P. 1995 Sport AlpineIII | | | 08-19-2010, 04:53 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2009 Location: Long Beach, SoCal Posts: 373 | Quote: Originally Posted by cloud9193 sounds like what happened when my fuel pump went, but im no expert on the matter | Looks like its a pretty easy DIY, did you tackle this yourself or have a shop do it? __________________ 1998'SportR.I.P. 1995 Sport AlpineIII | | | 08-20-2010, 09:58 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2009 Location: Long Beach, SoCal Posts: 373 | Today I decided to start small and replace the fuel filter, no dice! Im gonna have to order a fuel pump and I'll update. On a side note before this happened, I poured a bottle of slick50 fuel injector cleaner into an empty tank and filled it with 91. When it got down to just before the indicator illuminates, faliure happened. Im wondering if that was a mistake to add to the fuel tank. Any thoughts? __________________ 1998'SportR.I.P. 1995 Sport AlpineIII | | | 08-20-2010, 10:21 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Reading, PA Posts: 140 | @Mr. Crow, i took it to a shop, cause i bought the car there and the fuel pump went before the 1 week warranty went | | | 08-25-2010, 06:50 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2009 Location: Long Beach, SoCal Posts: 373 | Today I swapped out the fuel pump, Installation was a breeze. It fired right up like a roman candle on the 4th of July. -Some side notes worth mentioning, dont let ever let your fuel tank run too low, especially after adding fuel cleaner. -Its a good idea to replace your fuel filter when replacing the fuel pump. On m42's you will have to drop the fuel lines to get to the nut holding the filter in place. -With most tutorials and info it show's (2) fuel lines connecting to the top of the fuel pump. Send/return. Our cars only have the sending line plug which means one line connecting to the top of the fuel pump/sender. So dont stress if you dont see a return line. -Its also a good idea to use new parts: seal and clamps! Parts I used: #16146758735 Fuel pump sending unit #16111179637 Rubber seal 1) new 1" hose clamp Im back on the road! __________________ 1998'SportR.I.P. 1995 Sport AlpineIII | | | 08-25-2010, 08:03 PM | #9 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | Good to hear! __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 08-27-2010, 11:25 PM | #10 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Long Island, NY Posts: 57 | Thanks for the update. happy motoring... | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
