Question 318ti cooling fan

Hi,

Picked up my new 318ti (M44) yesterday. Driving home I noticed the temp gauge didn't rise beyond the first segment. Having a little spruce up of the engine bay today I found that the fan constantly runs when the engine is running. My question is - - is this normal???.

Other than that - what a great car, and a steal for £300.

I've checked the wiring to the switch and all seems ok. If I short the plug both fan speeds work, looks like the relays are ok. No oil in the water or vice versa. Could it be the rad switch????

Are we talking about the electric puller fan mounted behind the radiator? I think Euro ti's also came with a clutch fan mounted on the water pump pulley on the front of the engine. NA ti's didn't. Anyway, if it was the electric puller fan mounted behind the radiator, did you have the air conditioner turned on? The fan will run constantly while the A/C is switched on.

It's the one behind the radiator (it hasn't got an engine driven fan). The air con was off. Interestingly if you disconnect the fan switch in the radiator the fan stops - which leads me to think the switch is stuck on. The engine seems to be running fine in every other respect.

yes, seems like the switch in radiator is stuck
just put a tester on the switch (alarm mode)
if it screams on cold, its stuck...
easy to check
