Default Paint restoration question.

My paint is dull, faded, swirl-marked, etc. My friend recently used the roof of my car as a shelf for a cardboard box filled with 20lbs of crap, and he didn't lift it off... he slid it off... now there are a million hairline scratches going from the sunroof panel to the top of the passenger side door.

They aren't deep or anything, but obviously are more than just an eyesore. Would anyone be so kind as to suggest a compound or polish product that will do a good job of getting rid of these scratches? Should I take to to be professionally detailed?

I'm a do-it yourselfer, but it's getting cold and I don't want to screw up the paint any more.

Thanks in advance.

Use a paint cleaner, wax it, and let it go 'til spring.

When it warms up enough, have a go at it with 3M Buffing and Rubbing compound. Works better than Meguiars Pro and Mother's. (I also suggest doing a clay bar before the buffing starts).

The problem is that you'll probably want to do your entire car after.

If you have money and time, I would invest in a PC (Porter Cable Random orbital).
I've used it and have had good results.
What I've used with the PC was the Meguiar's 6.5 inch polishing pad with #80 Speed Glaze (It's a swirl remover if you're wondering).
This picture was from a Meguiar's workshop...I got the same results. (By the way, this was MY ACTUAL CAR)

It's in my gallary too so yah...

Good luck on your situation.

And if you go the PC route you can also try the #83 DACP as it is a little more aggressive than the #80.

OK, now that it is spring, I plan on doing the same thing. Could you go into more detail about the picture, i mean its pretty straight forward, except the bottom one. Did you mix the G/100 with the other products? and to what ratio? or did you do them individually? How many coats?

the guy that painted my car taught me to wash the car and not even dry it. apply the wax as you normally would but while the car is still wet. let it dry all the way and again with a wet cean cloth remove the wax the buff with a dry rag. this really helps avoid those swirl marks you get after waxing, not to mention wax dust.
