Ive been to STL three times in the past 5 weeks and I average well over 85mph on the highway. Everytime I get around 32mpg (on 87 octane if any one really cares). Its not bad considering the age of the car and almost 200k on the clock

Pnosker is hypermiling, however I don't think most BMW drivers bought their cars for that. Any car will get good mileage if driven slowly and smoothly, I once got 35mpg in a 4x4 doing a steady 45mph on the freeway (suicide). The EPA on our car is 25/29 and I get pretty much that in normal driving. Interestingly, the estimate for 318ti on fueleconomy.gov was revised in 2007 to 20/29, 23 combined.

This site: http://www.randomuseless.info/318ti/economy.html has some interesting empirical data on 318ti mileage.

I just wanted to let you guys know I filled up today. 13.2 gallons with 585 miles.

That's 44.3 mpg, OBC indicated 44.6 mpg.

I fill with 93 octane only. I find that I get the best mileage from gas purchased from Quick Chek in Ringoes, NJ or Blue Star in Flemington, NJ. The Exxon in Flemington, NJ gives me significantly lower mileage (around 39 mpg or so).

And yeah, I am hypermiling. The most serious hypermilers can get almost 100 mpg in an early 90's Civic. I drive reasonably with low acceleration and keep my top speed down to around the speed limit. This helps me not hit red lights and gives me phenomenal mileage. The funny thing is, even with my lower top speed, without the red lights, my average speed is higher than a lot of other cars on the road. I noticed the cars that passed me earlier on a 35 mile stretch, and I ended up passing them when they were waiting to start going at a red light in the left lane.

I find it hard to believe most of you aren't getting closer to 40mpg. I was getting 31 highway before my tranny swap and I'm still getting between 28-32 now with the auto rearend which is running seriously high rpms. I have a quarter tank left after 300miles currently.

A 400 mile tank is about 29 mpg, how are you figuring your mileage is 40???

I've been averaging about 33mpg over the past 5 weeks commuting to a class I take in College Park (about 35 miles one-way). This isn't all highway either, and I'm probably about a 3 or 4 to 1 highway to city ratio per tank.

He has a 4.45 ratio rear end instead of the 3.45 manual rear end. It's a prediction.

How do you determine what rear end ratio you have. I'm wondering if mine is dragging my mileage down. It runs about 3750 at 80 mph on stock tires.
